The era of Coach Shawn Alton as head coach of the Emery High baseball team began last week as the Spartans played five games and the team won all five of those games. Emery started off the season by defeating the North Sanpete Hawks by the score of 7-2. Emery then traveled to Mesquite, Nevada and won four games over three days. Emery won by the scores of 16-0, 13-1, 5-2 and 11-3. It appears that Emery can score runs and also play defense.
Against the Hawks, Emery scored once in the first inning, four times in the second inning and twice in the fifth inning while giving up a single run in each of the third and sixth innings. Easton Gordon went four for four at the plate with two singles, a double and a triple. Also with base hits were Kyson Stilson and Zach Jorgensen. Also with doubles were Tel Gardner, Koda Alton and Jorgensen.
Gardner started the game on the mound and went two innings giving up no hits, walking one and striking out three. Jorgensen went the next two innings and gave up a base hit and allowed a run while walking one and striking out two. Race Nielsen then pitched an inning allowing a base hit and a run. Blake Marchello pitched the final two innings and gave up three base hits.
Nielsen pitched Emery’s Thursday game that went just three innings because of the score. Race allowed two hits and struck out six. Emery scored three runs in the first inning, 11 runs in the second inning and two runs in the third inning. Emery had eight base hits and 12 walks. Hitting singles were Jordan Baletka, Easton Gordon, Bron Gordon, Nielsen, Logan Labrum and Cade Brazier. With doubles were Gardner and Alton.
In Friday games, Gardner pitched the game against Virgin Valley while Easton Gordon started on the mound against Pahranagat and Brazier pitched the final two outs. Against Virgin Valley, Emery scored twice in the first inning and three times in the third inning while giving up two runs in the third inning. Emery had nine base hits in the game with Balletka, Gardner and Labrum having two hits each. Labrum had the only extra base hits, a double. Also with singles were Gordon, Nielsen and Stilson.
Against Pahranagat Valley, Emery scored 13 runs in the fifth inning after allowing a single run in the first inning to claim the win. Getting base hits for Emery were Gordon, Jared Snow, Jorgensen, Alton, and Stilson. Baletka, Gardner and Nielsen each had a double.
On Saturday in the championship game against Virgin Valley, Emery scored five times in the first inning and three times in each of the third and
fourth innings while giving up a single run in the second, third and seventh innings. Jorgensen pitched five innings and Alton pitched the final two innings. The pair of Spartan pitchers only gave up four base hits but did allow eight walks.
Emery had nine base hits in this final game and seven batters drew walks while 10 Spartans struck out. Alton led the team with three base hits while Baletka and Labrum each had two base hits. Also, hitting singles were Gordon and Gardner. Emery travels to Roosevelt to face the Union Cougars this Wednesday and
then at home this Friday when Millard comes to town.

Although scheduled to open the season on the road at Carbon, Emery opened the 2017 season at home instead against Carbon due to the Dino field not being completely playable yet. And although the game was in Castle Dale, the offense was completely all Carbon as the Dinos won the game 12-0 as they amassed 13 base hits and gathered six walks.
The Dino pitching limited the Spartans to just a single base hit and gave up no walks. One other Emery batter got on base due to a Carbon error.
In a game that went just five innings due to the final score.
Carbon scored five times in the first inning, once more in the second and third innings, three times in the fourth inning and twice more in the top of the fifth inning. Kaytlyn Cripps led the way with three base hits including a triple. Carlie Robinson had Emery’s lone base hit, a single hit in the first inning that traveled to right center field. Adri Childs got on base due to an error by the centerfielder.
Emery then hosted Duchesne on Friday and the Eagles went home after losing the game 18-8. Emery scored twice in the first and three times in the second and led 5-1 after two innings.
Duchesne scored twice in both the third and fourth innings while the Spartans added five runs in the fourth inning and the Spartans led 10-6 after four innings. Duchesne narrowed the lead to 10-8 in the top of the fifth inning but the Spartans added eight runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game in five innings.
Emery had 10 base hits in the game with Addy Healy and Regan Rasmussen each having three base hits. Rasmussen had a pair of doubles in her hits while Healy had both a double and a triple. Morgann Donaldson hit a homerun in the fourth inning. Hitting singles were Ambree Bennett, Childs and Robinson.
Emery will travel to St George to play games this Friday and Saturday.
