San Juan High was the host school for this year’s Sterling Scholar program. The program was held at USU Eastern in Price. Mike Bowers was the master of ceremonies for the evening. Chancellor Joe Peterson from USU Eastern welcomed everyone to the campus. He said it was a great honor to have the Sterling Scholars on campus. The IQ on campus went up as well as the number of people wearing ties that day. He said all the students have exhibited a love for learning. He congratulated them on the drive and interest and enthusiasm.
Ryan Morley from Carbon High sang the National Anthem.
The emcee said Denzel Washington had recently addressed a graduation and his advice was to fall forward if you fail. Everyone will fail, but if you fall forward you can keep on going. “Everyone of you here is a winner. You won’t all win the top prize. You stand out just by being here,” said Bowers. The San Juan School District superintendent Ed Lyman spoke next. He said he was born in Utah but is a Texan by marriage and lived there for 35 years and is now back in Utah. He congratulated the Sterling Scholars on their achievements. He said they have an abundance of grit. It means fortitude, toughness, hardiness, resolve, detrmination, tenacity and endurance. The students have exhibited grit in getting to where they are. Some people are blessed with talent. But, many talented people don’t get to where these students are. These students have learned to persevere. Many people without grit don’t achieve, even if they have the talent.
Lyman had the audience repeat the quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained in sudden flight but, they while their companions slept, they were toiling upwards in the night.”
Mahatma Gandi said there’s more to improving life than increasing its speed. “You have to have balance in your life. Relationships, service, friends and family, don’t spend all your time on riches. Create balance. My father Emerson Lyman used to say, son there’s no limit to the amound of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit. Don’t take all the credit, nobody does it alone.
Madelin Lindsay gave a tribute to parents and teachers. She thanked the parents and guardians and teachers for always being there. “We wouldn’t be here without our parents. Our teachers and advisors have given us a lot of ideas and helped with our portfolios. Because of teachers and our parents we are here and we are amazing.
