Last week, in an abbreviated school week due to spring break, saw the Emery High baseball team split a pair of games with the San Juan Broncos as each team won on their home field. San Juan defeated Emery on Tuesday by the score of 9-2 and then Emery returned the favor on Wednesday in Castle Dale by the score of 2-1.
In the win at home, Zach Jorgensen pitched eight innings, throwing 112 pitches with 72 of those pitches being strikes. Jorgensen gave up eight base hits and two walks while striking out eight Bronco batters.
Neither team scored in the first four innings of the game and the Broncos scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Emery scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score. Neither team scored again in regulation time and the Spartans won the game in extra innings as they scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Spartans loaded the bases and a hit batter scored the winning run.
Koda Alton and Jorgensen scored the two runs for the Spartans and both had a base hit in the game with Jorgensen’s being a double, the lone Spartan extra-base hit. Both Alton and Jorgensen also picked up a walk in the game. Colton Willson and Kyler McDermott each had a RBI in the game, batting in the eighth and ninth position of the line-up. Also having base hits were Jordan Baletka, Easton Gordon and Willson.
In the loss on Tuesday, Emery scored just a single run in each of the fifth and sixth innings as the Spartan bats were able to pound out just six base hits in the game. Willson had a pair of singles and Baletka, Logan Labrum, and Alton each had one. Easton Gordon hit a double. Alton and Gordon scored the runs and Labrum and Willson each had an RBI.
Tel Gardner pitched the first five innings and gave up seven runs. Alton pitched the final inning and gave up two runs.
