A group of volunteers, city council members, city workers and citizens gathered in Ferron to celebrate Earth Day/Arbor Day.
The group planted 24 trees at the baseball field, fair grounds around the track and the cemetery in Ferron.
John Healy is a former forest service employee, he has taken on the task of helping Ferron with their tree plantings.
He instructed the tree planters on the proper way to plant the trees.
The holes were already dug and the team set about positioning the trees. Healy said not to get the holes too deep. One problem people have with tree planting is burying the tree too deep. “Don’t put the sod back into the hole. Fill the hole back up with the top soil. Loosen up the root ball so the roots will spread out and grow.”
The group planted the trees and then secured them with guide posts and steadied the tree on the side that receives the most wind in Ferron. The winds usually blow out of the canyon.
Adele Justice, former city employee and now council person started the efforts of getting trees to plant in Ferron 15 years ago. Ferron is part of the TreeUtah organization which offers discounts on the purchase of trees for communities.
Over the years hundreds of trees have been planted in Ferron in conjunction with these programs.
