Last weekend, Friday and Saturday, the Emery High track teams joined 42 other small schools and 58 big schools to participate in the annual BYU High School Invitational track meet. The Emery boys finished fifth in the small school division behind Delta and Beaver and a school from Idaho and a school from Wyoming. The boys scored 39 points. The Lady Spartans finished 32nd.
Braiden Ivie, a freshman for the Emery boys, had the best day of any Spartan as he finished second in both the 100 meter and the 200 meter races. Braiden’s times of 11.7 in the 100 and 22.19 in the 200 were also the third best time of the day in either big or small schools. It just so happens that the fastest boy in the state goes to Delta High School. Coincidently the fastest girl in the state is also from a small school, from Enterprise and the fastest hurdler in the state for girls’ is also from a small school, Gunnison.
Ty Mecham and Chase Jewkes finished third in their respective field events. Mecham was third in the shot put with a throw of 49’3” and Jewkes was third in the javelin with a throw of 158’6.25”. Logan Cox was sixth in the 200 meters and fifth in the 400 meters. The sprint relay team of Brady Boren, Ivie, Cox and Keldan Guymon finished fifth.
The Lady Spartans managed to place in just one event, the sprint medley relay race. The team of Jaylee Brinkerhoff, Shelbee Murdoch, Erin Hurst and Tayden Nielson finished sixth.
The Spartans will now conclude the season at the Region meet, probably at Grand High, and then the team will return to BYU for the state meet on May 19-20.
