Progress wins 11 awards at the Better Newspaper contest

The Emery County Progress recently received 11 awards at the Utah Press Association Better Newspaper contest. The awards banquet was held in Provo at the Utah Valley Convention Center. The Progress competes in group one for newspapers with a circulation under 2,500.
The Progress won first place for the Best Staff Produced Ad. The Progress received a third place for the best special section Energy guide. The Progress received a second place award for Public Notice. This was a new category this year where an article was written concerning an issue brought up in a public notice. The story written by editor Patsy Stoddard detailed the process the Deer Creek Mine has been put through in trying to close their mine and the issues with water discharge and obtaining the permitting to install a pipeline from the Rilda Portal to the holding pond at Huntington Plant.
The Progress received a second place for best feature story. The story “Changing of the white coats at Boyd’s Pharmacy,” written by Patsy Stoddard, editor. This story detailed the history of Boyd’s Pharmacy and the retirement of Boyd Nielson and the new pharmacist Westin Winn.
The Progress won second place for the best circulation promotion. Second place for the best advertising idea. Second place for the best use of color in an ad. The Progress won best community event which was also a new category. This was for the coverage of the college rocket competition in Green River.
The Progress won third place for Best Sports Page which included: soccer, rodeo, swimming, wrestling and boys and girls basketball.
The Progress won third place for Best Editors/Feature column for editorials written by Patsy Stoddard, editor.
The Progress won second place for Best Lifestyle/community page. Some of these stories included a Castle Dale Elementary play, Desert Edge play, Christensen’s Christmas village, Midnight Mass at the Mission San Rafael, weddings, missionaries, graduations, Forever Friends, Baby Oaklee’s journey and the Spardettes.
