The world is made up of vibrant colors. Everywhere you look there seems to be some kind of color that catches our eyes.
This year the Natural History Museum of Utah dedicated their Traveling Treasures to the world of colors with their theme, Nature of Colors. For 20 years, the Natural History Museum of Utah and Zions Bank have worked together to bring Traveling Treasures to every part of Utah.
Each month the Traveling Treasures go to a different city to display their treasures at a local Zions Bank.
At every stop, volunteers come out to help with exhibits and activities. This month their tour arrived in Castle Dale.
Many community members came out to show their support and participate in interactive activities. Patty Carpenter, a manager with the exhibit, has been displaying six selected cases and 12 activities each month. “There’s something for everyone here and maybe you’ll even find a gold coin in the Sleuth exhibit,” Carpenter remarked.
The exhibits ranged from shells and fossils to butterflies and a sleuthing exhibit. Young and old came out to experience all the exhibits.
The Museum of the San Rafael came down to join in the fun. Maegan Wilberg, director of the museum, invited the community to Dancing Through Time on June 16. This event is in conjunction with The Smithsonian exhibit “The Way We Worked” currently on display at the Museum.
Her exhibit outlined all the free activities the will be offered this summer in Castle Dale.
The Rockhounder exhibit allowed children to look at rocks through a magnifying glass.
Joyce, a Natural History Volunteer explained, “When looking at crystals through a microscope, you can see all the wonderful colors that otherwise would go unnoticed.” Rollie was a volunteer at the Sleuth box where people could pan for pyrite, crystal lite, and gold dollars. This is where children could learn that Utah is rich in minerals and identify what each mineral looked like.
If you missed The Traveling Treasures family night and the activities you can still catch them. The display will remain at the Castle Dale Branch until the end of June. The Traveling Treasures will be traveling in July to Delta.
