Letter to the editor

Dear Editor:
I would like to add to Brian Hawthorne’s Ode to Tom Gnojek in the June 20 issue of the Emery County Progress. I worked with Tom and his side-kick J Leavy (or maybe against them) as president of the SouthEastern Utah OHV Club to save as many of the trails and roads as we could in the San Rafael Swell. I would like to publicly thank the members of SEUOHV Club that put in so much time, hard work and money to that effort. We saved, for the time being, Devil’s Racetrack, Eva Conover Road, North and South Coal Wash, Fix-It-Pass and many that aren’t quite as  prominent.
Recently, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) and BLM announced a settlement to a lawsuit had been submitted to the US District Court in Utah. If the settlement is approved, the San Rafael Travel Plan will have to be re-done completely. We need to get ready to fight again to keep the routes open.
SUWA is going to be pushing extra hard to close these and many others. We need to make sure our County Commissioners and Public Land Council are for our RS-2477 roads and trails. If we don’t keep fighting we will have nothing for us, our kids and grandkids but wilderness. Please make your wishes known to our County Government. They have worked tirelessly in the past and will continue to do so if we support them.
Mark H Williams
Past president of SouthEastern Utah OHV Club
Past committee member of Public Lands Council
