Before a packed house, on breezy, cool football weather night the Emery High Spartans and the Carbon Dinos played a region football contest that also happened to be Emery’s Homecoming game last Friday night. The two teams kept both sets of fans fully engaged as they fought a battle the full game before Emery kicked a field goal with little time left on the clock to break a tied game at the time and the Spartans won 19-16.
Emery’s Easton Gordon intercepted a Dino pass at the end of the game to thwart any hopes of a Dino come back. Carbon received the opening kickoff but was unable to gain a first down and punted the ball. Emery managed to get deep into Carbon territory before their drive stalled and Brock Winter came on and kicked a field goal to give Emery a 3-0 lead.
Both teams went three and out on their second drives and after the Spartan punt pinned Carbon at their 1-yard line, Emery started their third drive at the Dino 40-yard line and the Spartans ran seven plays before Colton Willson caught a touchdown pass from Kyson Stilson that covered 18 yards and Emery led 9-0 after the two-point extra point try went incomplete. Carbon scored as time ran down in the second quarter and added the two-point conversion and the score was 9-8 at the half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter but the Spartans got close before a fumble occurred after a 25-yard gain on a pass and Carbon had the ball. The fumble was at the 5-yard line. Emery scored in the fourth quarter on a 48-yard pass from Stilson to Willson and an extra-point kick by Winter put the Spartans up 16-8. Carbon quickly marched down field and scored on a long pass and added the two-point conversion and the score was knotted at 16-16.
With around three minutes left on the game clock, Emery started a drive at their 35-yard line and completed two of four passes for 40 yards, ran the ball once for 3 yards and Carbon got a 15-yard penalty before Winter entered the game and kicked his second field goal of the game and the Spartans held on to win.
Stilson completed 12 of 20 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns as the Spartans were efficient through the air. Willson caught 6 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, Gordon caught 4 passes for 50 yards and Jaymes Bowman caught 2 passes for 11 yards. Gordon ran the ball 7 times for 27 yards and Willson ran the ball 2 times for 8 yards. Rance Jensen carried the ball 16 times for 48 yards to lead the team effort. Defensively, Stilson and Gordon each had an interception. Lon Huntsman led the team with 12 tackles and Drake Hoffman had 11 tackles. AC Reeve had 7 tackles and Gordon had 6 tackles. With 5 tackles each was Landon Fairbanks, Jesse Barnett and Willson. Emery will play their final home game of the regular season this Friday night as they host region rival Morgan at 7 p.m. Come out and support the Spartans in this key region contest.
