Last Wednesday afternoon the Emery High boys’ cross-country team did exactly what they thought they could, they won the 3-A state title at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.
They defeated the Richfield Wildcats by the narrowest of margins but defeat them they did. Richfield had won the region title the week before as they scored 36 points and Emery scored 43 points.
The Emery boys have finished second at state the past two years and were determined this year to improve upon those finishes. That is why they were out running sprints on the high school track the day before, working hard to improve and get just that much faster and finish the race with a kick. Tanyon Allred, a senior, had the best Emery finish as he ended up eighth and he was followed by Bryar Meccariello, a freshman, that finished ninth.
There were six seconds between the two times.
Fourteen seconds back was teammate McKay Meccariello, a junior, in 14th place. Griffin Livingston, a sophomore, was next in 18th place and Ty Funk, a senior, finished in 21st place.
Emery’s team score at this time was 70 points and Richfield also finished with 70 points. The rules state that they take the time of the next finisher for each school and use that finish as the tie breaker. The first runner across will give his team the title. Emery’s next finisher was Chase Christiansen, a junior. Christiansen had finished second for Emery the prior week at region and was usually found at the top of the score card.
Christiansen finished six seconds ahead of the next Wildcat runner and even though he didn’t have his normal finish, his finish gave his team the team title by the narrowest of margins. Emery’s final runner was Mason Faimalo, another junior. Emery will have four runners back next year so maybe they can finish first a second time, Congratulations team, you worked hard and you earned it.
