Veterans Day observances in county

Emery County celebrated Veteran’s Day with programs throughout the county. Veteran’s Day is observed every year on Nov. 11. It commemorates the armistice with Germany that ended World War I on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Veteran’s Day was first observed as Armistice Day until 1954 when it was renamed Veteran’s Day.
Ferron Elementary started their day with their Liberty Kids recognition. Seven students received the Liberty Kids award, Swayzie Thornley, Carter Jensen, Sage Cook, Carson Bernard, Mason Thornley, Zoey Sundstrom and Isabelle Perkins. The students watched a video about Veteran’s Day, sang the national anthem and recited the pledge of allegiance.
San Rafael Middle School held their annual Veteran’s Day program. Veterans, students and their families gathered as American Legion Post 42 presented the program. Army Staff Sgt. Barton spoke to the students. He told the story of a hero, Staff Sgt. Aaron Butler. He was killed clearing a booby-trapped building on Aug. 16 in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province. Butler was a member of the green berets. Butler was from Monticello. He was a natural athlete. He was a four time state wresting champion. What stood out the most about Butler was his bravery. He was described by many friends and family as a protector. He gave his life serving this country and paid the ultimate price.
At the veteran’s memorial in Castle Dale, American Legion Post 39 hosted the events. Commander Mack Huntington welcomed everyone to the event. Commissioner Wilson spoke about Veterans Day and how much he appreciated the service of our veterans. Sarah Swasey sang a song. Castle Dale Elementary attended the event and the students sang the song of each branch of the military. Veterans were asked to stand during their respective song. The students sang I’m proud to be an American. The Emery High School band played patriotic songs for the event. Commander Ray Quinn and Milton Wiseman placed the wreath at the memorial. The American Legion presented a 21 gun salute and Taps was played. After the program cookies and punch were served. The Museum of the San Rafael had a special veterans display for everyone to see.
At the Orangeville community center a veterans display was set up. Navy veteran, Chris Hardman spoke to the Cottonwood Elementary fifth grade class. The students listened as Hardman told of his military experience.
In the evening veterans and their spouses were invited to the Orangeville community center for a dinner. The American Legion Auxiliary planned and served the meal of soup, rolls and desserts.
A Christmas dinner is planned for veterans and their spouses on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Orangeville community center.
