Emery boys basketball start season with win

The Emery High boys’ basketball team opened preseason play last week with an away game at Delta High School. The Spartan varsity team left the home of the Rabbits with a 74-57 victory. Emery grabbed the early lead in the first quarter and led 15-7 at the end of that period. Both teams scored 16 points in the second period and the Spartans maintained their eight-point advantage. Emery won the third quarter 19-16 and the final period 24-18 to get to the final 17 point difference in score.
Emery was led in scoring by Tyler Butler. Butler went four for seven from inside the 3-point line, four for nine outside the line and two for three at the free-throw line to score his points. Three other Spartans ended up in double figures in this first game of the year, Brax Jensen scored 17 points, Kyson Stilson scored 16 points and Easton Gordon scored 14 points. Cade Brazier was the only other Spartan to score and he had 5 points.
Gordon led the team with 8 rebounds, three offensive and five defensive, and Brazier had 7 rebounds with Butler pulling down 6, Kyler Wilstead 5 and Stilson 4 rebounds. Jensen and Brodie Tuttle each had 3 rebounds.
The Spartan team had three blocked shots in the game, two by Butler and one by Stilson. Emery had seven steals in the game with Gordon having three and Brazier and Stilson two each. Stilson and Jensen each had five assists and Gordon had four.
Emery will play three road games this week starting tonight at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork. Maple Mountain is a 5-A school.
This Friday and Saturday the team will travel to Richfield and play a couple of games. On Friday they will face Morgan and on Saturday they will face Dixie, a 4-A school.
