Basketball season in full swing: Green River and Emery High

Last week the Emery High boys’ basketball team played three games as the season is now in full swing.  Emery traveled to Springville on Tuesday night and there they played the 5-A Maple Mountain High team, a team they beat 72-69.  On Friday and Saturday, the team traveled to Richfield to participate in the Central Utah basketball preview tournament.  On Friday the team lost a close one to Morgan High by the score of 62-60.  On Saturday the team played 4-A’s Dixie High and the team lost 72-50 to the Flyers.
At Maple Mountain Emery found themselves down at the end of the first quarter 22-16 and down at the half 34-31 as they narrowed the deficit in that second quarter.  Emery won the third quarter 21-10 and led 52-44. Emery then held off Maple Mountain in the fourth quarter and claimed the win.
Cade Brazier scored 25 points as he hit seven three-pointers and led the team to victory.  Tyler Butler scored 20 points in the win.  Also scoring were Brax Jensen with 12 points, Kyson Stilson and Brodie Tuttle with 5 points each, Alex Orozco with 3 points and Easton Gordon with 2 points.  Butler had 11 rebounds and 3 steals to lead the team in those categories, Stilson had 6 assists to also lead the team in that and Stilson also had 7 rebounds.
Against Morgan the two teams battled evenly throughout the game as it stayed close all during the game.  Morgan led by one after the first quarter, Morgan led by three at the half, the two teams were tied at the end of three and Morgan outscored Emery 22-20 in the fourth quarter to claim the win. Stilson and Brazier led the team in scoring in this game with 14 points each and Jensen and Gordon each scored 10 points.  Butler had 5 points and Tuttle had 2 points.
On Saturday, Emery trailed 17-11 after the first quarter and Dixie increased their lead from there in every period to win the game.  Dixie is a team that went 24-3 last season and finished third at state and is forecast to finish second this season in their region. Stilson led the team with 14 points and Cade Brazier scored 10 points to be the only other Spartan to finish in double figures.  Butler and Gordon each scored 8 points, Jensen scored 6 points and Kyler Wilstead scored 4 points.
Emery will host Carbon this Wednesday night and then will host Maeser Prep on Friday in the Spartan Center.
The Emery High Lady Spartans went on the road twice last week and each time they returned home victorious as they defeated the North Summit Braves on Tuesday and then the Millard Eagles on Thursday night.  The score of the North Summit game was 79-54 and the score of the Millard game was 77-48.
At North Summit junior Megan Jensen scored 34 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and had 3 steals in the game to lead the team to victory. Kinlee Toomer scored 14 points and Lainee Jensen scored 13 points in the relatively easy win.  Emery led 22-16 after the first quarter and 44-27 at the half.  They continued pulling away throughout the game as they won the third quarter 12-9 and the final period 23-18.
Also scoring in this game were Bailey Huggard with 7 points, Kacelyn Toomer with 5 points, Morgan Hurdsman and Tayden Nielson with 2 points each and Makieya Bertuzzi and Brileigh Curtis with 1 point each.  Kinlee also had 7 rebounds and Bailey had 6 rebounds.  Morgan had 6 assists to lead the team and also had 5 rebounds.  Kinlee also had 3 steals.
In Fillmore the Lady Spartans actually trailed after the first quarter by the score of 13-11, their first deficit of the season at the end of a period.  But the Millard lead was short lived as the Spartans won the second quarter 29-11 and led 40-24 at the break.  Emery won the third period 21-14 and closed out the game by winning the fourth quarter 16-10. Four Lady Spartans finished the game in double figures scoring led by Kacelyn Toomer with 20 points on nine of 17 shooting in the game. Megan followed with 19 points as she made eight of ten shots in the game.
Kinlee scored 15 points and Lainee scored 14 points as these four starters accounted for 68 of the 77 points.  Also scoring in the game were Huggard with 4 points, Hurdsman with 4 points and Nielson with 1 point.
In other stats for this game, Megan led with 12 rebounds and Kinlee led with 10 assists.  Kacelyn and Lainee each had 5 steals for the Spartans to lead in this category.
 Bailey, Kacelyn and Lainee each had 5 rebounds while Morgan had 4 and Kinlee 3.  Morgan also had 5 assists and Lainee had 4.  Both Kinlee and Megan each had 4 steals in the game and Morgan had 3.
Emery will be at home this Tuesday evening as they will host the Union Cougars and then the Lady Spartans will go back on the road as they will travel to Beaver on Thursday evening.
The Green River girls basketball team has started their 2017-2018 season.
The Lady Pirates have not been able to secure a win yet, but once they settle into region play they will start to see some wins. In the 1A preview they played two games.
The Lady Pirates lost to Manilla  with the final score 45-40.
Maribel Escalante was the leading scorer in the game with 21 points. Miranda Johnson was also in double figures scoring 11 points. Other players scoring in the game were Selene Mendoza, Rebecka Shaffer, Taylynn Lovato and Daniela Mendez.
In the second game of the 1A preview they took on Milford. Milford won this match up with the final score of 45-23. The Lady Pirate just couldn’t get things going offensively to score some points. Maribel Escalante finished with 10 points, scoring her only points on two 3 points shots and 4 free throws. Johnson scored 6 points and Lovato scored 7 points. All of the points were scored by three players, which makes it difficult to get a win.
In the third game of the season Green River played Grand. The final score was 40-44 with Green River losing the game. Maribel Escalante scored 15 points. Lovato scored 10 points, Alondra Escalante scored 9 points, Mendez scored 4 points and Johnson scored 2 points.
The Lady Pirates traveled to Castle Dale on Saturday night for a scrimmage game against the Emery High girls basketball junior varsity team. Emery took the win in this game by a score of 58-43.
