Prior to last week’s games the Emery High Lady Spartan basketball team was ranked tenth in the state in any classification and first in the state in the 3-A ranks with Richfield right behind the Emery team at eighteenth in the state and second in 3-A. Both teams lost last season in the championship game of their respective class.
On Tuesday night in Richfield the two teams finally hit the floor ready to play each other. Emery lost for only the second time this season by the score of 49-39 and with the loss their season record is now 12-2. In almost every other game the Lady Spartans had scored almost 39 points by halftime.
Emery fell behind right off the bat as the Lady Wildcats hit shots from everywhere on the floor and the score was 18-9 at the end of the period. The second quarter was kind of a mystery as the Spartan defense allowed the Wildcats to only score 8 points, a pretty good showing it would appear.
Unfortunately, the Spartan offense only scored 2 points in that same quarter and they now trailed 26-11 at the half.
The second half was better as they won both quarters, 12-9 and 16-14 but it was not enough to prevent a loss. Megan Jensen scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds plus she added 3 steals and an assist. Lainee Jensen scored 7 points, Kacelyn Toomer scored 5 points and Kinlee Toomer and Bailey Huggard each scored 4 points. Kacelyn stepped on a foot and will now miss several games as her ankle heals.
On Thursday the Emery team traveled to Monroe to face the South Sevier Rams and tonight they returned home with a 61-46 win. Kinlee led the team with 19 points as she knocked down five 3-point shots and she also added 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Megan scored 13 points and Lainee scored 12 points as did Bailey. Morgan Hurdsman started for the injured Kacelyn and she scored 5 points.
Emery will play at North Sanpete on Tuesday night and then will play in Castle Dale for the first time in several weeks on Thursday night as they will host Manti. These should be easy games for the Emery team. Manti is 1-10 on the season and North Sanpete is 0-12.
