Emery High Wrestling to send 15 to state tourney

Last weekend at the Sevier Valley Center the 3-A Divisionals were held and Delta won the A Division and Juab High won the B Division. Delta, the defending 2-A champion but now in 3-A, scored 397 points and South Summit was second with 322 points. In the B Division Juab, the defending 3-A champion, scored 453.5 points with Morgan second with 294 points. Emery High was fourth in the B Division with 277 points.
Emery qualified 15 wrestlers for this week’s 3-A Utah State championship meet at Utah Valley University. Aaron Reeve in the 285-pound weight class won the class for Emery and was the lone champion for the Spartans. Spartan Drake Hoffman finished third in that same class.
McKay Meccariello finished second in the 145-pound weight class, Newt Oveson finished second in the 170-pound weight class and Korby Christiansen finished second in the 113-pound weight class as three Spartans made it to the finals of their respective divisions.
Also qualifying for the state tournament this week are Dwain Farley in the 106-pound class with a third-place finish and Jarin Allen in that same class with a fourth-place finish.
James Oveson finished sixth in the 113-pound class. Drake Mangum was fifth and Dax Hall was eighth in the 120-pound class, Chase Christiansen was sixth in the 126-pound class and Zachary World finished third in the 132-pound class and Bryar Meccariello was fifth in the 138-pound class. Finally Augustus Dalton finished third in the 152-pound class and Braden Howard was seventh in the 182-pound class. The 3-A tournament will he held February 9-10.
The Emery High wrestling team concluded their region season at home against the North Sanpete Hawks in the Spartan Center. It was senior night and the Spartans, after thanking their senior wrestlers, defeated the Hawks 57-15.
The Hawks points came from two Emery forfeits, they didn’t have a wrestler in either the 160-pound or 220-pound weight classes and their lone loss of the night, a tight match in the 182-pound weight class where Newt Oveson lost 2-1. Newt went up from his normal 170-pound class.
Emery won the first match of the night as Dwain Farley won by forfeit the 106-pound weight class.
Korby Christiansen, in the 113-pound class, then pinned his opponent with 39.9 seconds remaining in the first round after registering a take down.
Emery won the third match of the night as Drake Mangum won the 120-pound weight with a pin in the second round.
Chase Christiansen made the score 24-0 after he pinned his man in the 126-pound class with 51.9 seconds remaining in the first round.
At 132 pounds, Zac World won by a 7-1 decision. At 138 pounds, Bryar Meccariello took down his opponent and pinned him all in 44 seconds and then McKay Meccariello pinned his opponent in the second round of the 145-pound class. In the 152-pound class, Gus Dalton pinned his man in the first round, Braden Howard won the 195-pound class by
forfeit and then in the final match of the night, AC Reeve won the 285-pound class with a pin in the second round.
The seniors honored were AC Reeve, Drake Hoffman, Newt Oveson and Zac World.
