Augustus Dalton, a junior at Emery High, wrestled his way to the championship match in the 152-pound weight class and his team then finished fifth at the Utah 3-A wrestling tournament last week at Utah Valley University. Dalton won his first three matches, two by way of a pin and one by decision, and then lost to a wrestler from Morgan High in the championship match by the score of 8-5. Dalton had a season record of 45-7. Emery scored 128 points to finish behind Juab with 304 points, Delta with 225.5, Morgan with 171 and Union with 132.
Senior Newt Oveson and sophomore Korby Christiansen finished third in their respective classes to help give the Spartans one of their better final days in recent years. Oveson at 170 pounds and Christiansen at 113 pounds each went 4-1 over the two-day meet to score points for their team. Oveson finished the season with a 46-9 record while Christiansen finished 42-10.
Also placing in the top six were 106 pounder Dwain Farley, a freshman, with a fifth-place finish; Drake Mangum, a freshman in the 120-pound weight class with a sixth-place finish; McKay Meccariello, a junior, with a fifth-place finish in the 145-pound weight class and Drake Hoffman, a senior, with a sixth-place finish in the 285-pound class.
Eight other wrestlers traveled to Orem for the Emery team and competed in their weight classes. Jarin Allen, a freshman, in the 106-pound class; James Oveson, a freshman, in the 113-pound weight class; Dax Hall, a freshman in the 120-pound weight class; Chase Christiansen, a junior in the 126-pound weight class; Zachary World, a senior in the 132-pound weight class; Bryar Meccariello, a freshman in the 138-pound weight class; Braden Howard, a freshman in the 182-pound weight class and Aaron Reeve, a senior in the 285-pound weight class that lost out due to injury in his second match. Drake Hoffman also wrestled at 285.
