Last week saw the Emery High boys’ basketball team close out their region season with a pair of games, one home and one away. On Wednesday, the Spartans hosted Grand High and the Spartans came away with a win against the third-ranked Red Devils by the score of 92-83. On Friday, the Spartans traveled to Blanding to play San Juan and the Broncos got the win when they sank a pair of free throws with three seconds still on the clock to get the 59-57 victory. Emery had led the whole game and led 48-39 going into the fourth quarter.
Emery and San Juan concluded the region season tied for fourth in region 15. After the game, the two teams flipped a coin for seeding into this weeks 3-A state tournament and the Spartans won the flip and will now face Summit Academy this Saturday at 11:50 a.m. at Wasatch High School in Heber City. Emery finished the region season with 5-7 record and the season with a 11-10 record.
Morgan is the top-ranked team in 3-A basketball with a 19-2 season record followed by South Sevier with a 19-3 record. Grand is third with a 16-5 record followed by South Summit at 13-8 and Delta at 16-5. South Sevier won region 15 with a 10-2 record followed by Grand at 8-4 and Manti at 7-5. Emery and San Juan were next and then came Richfield at 4-8 and North Sanpete closed it out with a 3-9 record. North Sanpete is the lone region team that will miss the playoffs. Against Grand, Emery led 23-12 after the first quarter and then 52-34 at the half. Grand won the third quarter 24-21 and the final period 25-19.
Emery was led in scoring by Kyson Stilson with 34 points as he connected on eight of 13 shots in the game. Kyson also had 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal and a blocked shot. Brax Jensen scored 18 points and Cade Brazier scored 16 points and had 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. Tyler Butler scored 11 points, Easton Gordon scored 7, Kyler Wilstead scored 4 and Alex Orosco scored 2.
Jensen led the team against San Juan with 16 points and Gordon and Stilson each scored 12. Brazier had 7, Butler had 5 and Wilstead had 3.
