The Emery County School District held their spelling bee on Feb. 8. The top spellers from all of the elementary and middle schools represented their respective school. Ralph Worthen introduced the contestants and gave them a plaque for qualifying for the spelling bee. The spelling bee lasted seven rounds with Addie Miller from Canyon View as the winner.
The students each took turns at the microphone spelling words. The words that tripped students up were: scrabble, ballot, easel, mentor, gunnysack, macaroni, gardenia, manicure, prairie, hickory, gorgeous, necessary, cordial, azalea and flabbergasted.
In the final round Addie spelled the word linoleum correctly. She had to spell one more word to be declared the champion. Her word was sophomore. Bryndli Stevens finished in second place and Jesse Tuttle finished in third place. Addie, Bryndli and Jesse will compete in the region spelling bee on March 8 at Green River High School. The region spelling bee will consist of spellers from Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan school districts. Qualifying but not participating in the spelling bee were Kamilla Escalante, Lilian Gonzalez and Trevin Wakefield.
