It was Mrs. McElprang’s last week of teaching in the the Emery District. She has been a long time teacher at Huntington Elementary.
During her career she was well known for her plays which she wrote herself. Her husband’s mother also wrote many plays for her before she passed away.
Another tradition for her classroom was the Christmas caroling trip in her husband’s wagon drawn by his very large horses. The carolers arrived at Marie and Danny Johnson’s home where they were treated to hot cocoa and cookies each year.
Mrs. McElprang believes the production of plays teaches the children many critical skills. It’s not an easy task, but memorizing the songs and each child memorizing their own individual parts teaches them discipline and concentration skills. Performing in front of an audience also teaches the children confidence in themselves and in their abilities.
The school will miss Mrs. McElprang and all her contributions to the betterment of the children in her class. She always went the extra mile to make sure each child came up to grade level or beyond in their reading abilities.
With retirement, Mrs. McElprang would like to continue her writing and illustrating. She would like to develop plays that she would market to other schools and various venues.
