Emery church

The Old Emery Church House
By Doris Mangum
There’s a big old church house uptown
Some folks want to tear it down
And others think that is should stay
It would cost a mint to repair
And a lot of tender loving care
Because obviously it’s seen a better day
And so the debate goes on
But nothing ever gets done
And the old church just looks more forlorn
Should it go or should it stay
Is the question asked each day
But no’one can decide what’s right or wrong
It has endured well over a hundred years
Build by faithful pioneers
Sawing logs and building bricks was not a labor small
It was a beauty in it’s hey’ day
And is still photographed by folks who pass this way
A sentinel standing proud and tall
Though a place of worship was meant to be
It became much more than that you see
A church on Sunday, movie theater on Wednesday, community dinner held there each spring and fall
A place for funerals weddings too
And even elections, just to name a few
And folks would come from miles around for the annual deer hunters ball
Many would be sad to see it torn down
And it would surely leave a bare spot in our town
But left abandoned it’s becoming a dangerous eyesore
We must decide before it’s too late. And finally end this long debate
Do we tear it down or can we afford to have it restored?
