The 2018 Emery High football season officially kicked off last Friday night with the annual Black and Gold game. The high school team consists of roughly 60 players this season with six of those players being seniors and 12 being juniors. Those 60 players were equally, as much as possible, divided between two teams and those players battled rather evenly all night long. The team coached by Eric Mortensen and Scott Stilson defeated the team coached by Dave Justice and Jay Howard.
Dave is new to the staff this season and is teaching at Emery High. Jon Faimalo is the head coach and also the defensive coordinator, Chris Justice is the offensive coordinator and Gary Arrington is the special teams coach.
The six seniors will all have important roles on this seasons team. Kyson Stilson is starting again this season at quarterback, Rance Jensen is starting at a halfback position and a strong safety position, Jesse Barnett and Koda Alton will start as guards on offense and as ends on defense and both will see time as long snappers on special teams, Ashton Rowley will start on both the offensive and defensive lines and Brock Winter will handle all kicking duties this season. All six seniors are solid players.
The juniors on this seasons team are Sayer Nelson, Jaymes Bowman, Szion Gibson, Bron Gordon, Seth Justice, Bryson Baggs, Tegan Christman, Daeden Behling, Anthony Reid, Kelton Gordon, Braxton Young and Jordan Ekker. All should contribute to the success the team has.
Emery will face Richfield High this Friday night on the Spartan Field with the game starting at 7 p.m. Emery will then travel on the road the next two Friday nights, first going to Moab and then to Payson, before they come home for another game. The 3-A North region includes Emery, Carbon, Union, Morgan, Grantsville and Judge Memorial. The 3-A South region includes Richfield, Manti, Juab, Summit Academy, Juan Diego and North Sanpete.
