Last week the Emery High football team went on the road to play a good Grand High team in Moab and the result was another double-digit loss for the Spartans. The final score of the game was Grand 42 Emery 17 with the halftime score being 35-7. Emery won the second half 10-7 as Grand only scored in that half by an intercepted pass.
Grand scored at will in the first half mainly by going deep over the middle as the Spartan defense was slow in reacting to the deep pass route. With just over a quarter of the Emery team being juniors and seniors this season, the coaching staff knows that on the job training will be a common occurrence throughout the year. The team does get better every quarter.
Spartan quarterback Kyson Stilson completed twenty of thirty-three passes during the game but just four of the final ten attempts. The receivers had some drops that prevented another score or two by the Emery offense.
Those passes went for 178 yards and included one touchdown throw to receiver Jaxton Madsen covering five yards. The extra point kick by Brock Winter was good. Madsen’s score came at the end of an eleven play, sixty-four-yard drive. The long plays of the drive were two pass completions, one to Jensen for twenty yards and one to Szion Gibson for eighteen yards.
After Grand Scored on the interception on the first second-half Emery drive, Emery responded with a nine-play, seventy-five-yard drive that culminated after a 23-yard run/scramble by Stilson for the touchdown.
Half back Rance Jensen carried the ball five times on that drive for 18 yards. The kick by Winter was good. Emery’s final score came on Emery’s final drive of the game when kicker Winter hit a thirty-two-yard field goal. Stilson hit Jaymes Bowman on a twenty-three-yard completion and Seth Justice with a ten-yard pass for the big plays on the drive.
Brock Winter kicked an onside kick after the second Spartan score and Jerrick Macdonald came up with the bouncing ball for Emery. Quinton Sorenson had an interception in the second half for Emery. Jensen was the leading rusher with sixty-five yards on twenty-two carries. The leading tacklers in the game were Jensen with 10 tackles, Teagan Christman with 9 tackles, Daeden Behling and Jeremy Brannon with 6 tackles each and Ashton Rowley and Bron Gordon with 5 tackles each.
Emery travels to Payson this Friday night to face the 4-A Lions in a preseason match. Payson defeated Carbon last Friday night.
