The Emery High Lady Spartan volleyball team started the 2018 season last week with a three-set win at Carbon. Emery won the first game 26-24, the second 25-23 and the final game 27-25 on a kill shot by Bailey Huggard.
The first game ended after the Dinos had missed shots for the final two points and the middle game ended when Megan Jensen’s kill shot went off a Carbon player.
The first game Emery jumped out to a 6-3 lead with Megan Dawes serving.
Emery maintained that lead all the way to 23-21 and then the Dinos tied the score at 23-23. The score was tied at 24-24 and then Emery won. In game two Emery went from a 3-2 advantage to a 10-3 advantage, again with
Dawes serving the ball. The Spartans saw their lead increase to 19-10 before the Dinos regrouped and cut the Spartan advantage to 23-22. Emery had numerous mishifts in this Dino run to assist Carbon in the comeback.
Game three was more of the same. Emery was down 3-1 before Huggard went back to serve and the Spartans led 6-3 when she was done. Dawes then served and the lead jumped to 10-5. With Adri Childs serving the lead increased to 15-8. Emery led 19-12 until Carbon had one final rally.
Carbon cut the lead to 22-21, Emery took the lead back to 24-21 with Megan Jensen serving but the Dinos were not yet through as they actually took the lead at 25-24 before the Spartans responded with three straight points.
If the games went to 15 points then the Spartans win easily every time but they went to 25 and the Spartans had to survive.
The Emery players at Carbon were Huggard, Jensen, Dawes, Madisyn Alton, Childs, Shyler Griffin, Bralin Wilde and Autumn Stilson. Stilson is a junior and Wilde is a sophomore and the others are all seniors.
Emery went to St George last Friday and Saturday with the varsity, JV and freshman teams all playing in their own tournament. Emery will also play Brighton, Orem, Uintah, Cedar City and Uintah.
This week Emery plays at Grand High on Tuesday and then plays at home on Thursday against North Sanpete.
