Field trip to Spring Canyon

Emery County Historical Society

Invites you to tour the Coal Camps of

Spring Canyon

The Spring Canyon District was called home to over 2,000 miners, businessmen and their families as the mines extracted almost 43 million tons of coal from these rugged hills from the late 19th century through the 1960’s. The first mine district in Spring Canyon was established in 1895 at Storrs. Over the next several decades, numerous mines and small settlements sprouted up in the canyon, including Standardville, Rains, Peerless, Mutual and Latuda. Join us with our tour guide, Robert Potts as we travel this vintage path to see numerous foundations and mining remains that are still there.

After our tour of Spring Canyon, we will visit Utah State University Eastern’s Art Gallery where we will be privileged to view “LIFE IN A UTAH COAL CAMP” — Dorothea Lange’s photographs of Consumers Mining Camp, 1936.
