The Emery Spartan baseball team concluded pre-season play with a road trip to Montrose, Colo. last Friday and Saturday. The Spartans now prepare to open region play at Carbon High on March 22.
The Spartans finished the pre-season with a 3-7 record but Coach Jimmy Jones is encouraged with the play of his young squad. “We are a good hitting team, our problems are pitching and defense. We are improving in both areas, but we are a young baseball team and we do make a lot of mistakes still. Our pitchers are all basically new to pitching varsity ball but we are gaining great experience. We are going to do all right.”
Emery has given up 38 unearned runs on 28 errors. The pitchers have combined for 17 wild pitches and 11 hit batsmen.
Last week Emery played five games. They traveled to Vernal and lost 11-5 and then hosted Cedar City and lost 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning. At Montrose, they lost to Lakewood, Northridge and Montrose.
As a team, Emery is batting .317 for the year. Four Spartans are batting over .400 led by Conlee Luke, who is batting .471 after 10 games. Luke has 16 hits in 34 at bats with 12 RBIs. Kyler Edgehouse is batting .406 with seven RBIs. Trevor Thompson is batting .405 with eight RBIs and Kade Jones is batting .400.
AJ Mitcheson and Spencer Cook are also hitting the ball well as they are hitting .385 and .379 respectively.
Luke and Edgehouse lead Emery with three homeruns each as the team has hit 11 this season. Thompson is leading the team with four doubles as the team has hit 18.
Emery faces Carbon today before hosting Lehi next week on Wednesday.
