Pirates sweep Monument Valley, split Altamont

It was a good week for the Lady Pirates as they won two ball games, a region win over Monument Valley and a non-region contest against Altamont.
The scores were 74-39 over Monument Valley and 58-38 over Altamont.
The boy’s team from Green River won the region contest over Monument Valley 82-56 but lost the contest against Altamont 69-50.
Brandi Webster continued her role as the team’s leading scorer with a 28-point performance against Monument Valley and a 21-point night against Altamont. Cady Mecham was second leading scorer with 14 points on Saturday night and 10 points on Thursday night at Altamont.
In both games the Lady Pirates took the early lead and never looked back. Against the Longhorns, Green River led 16-6 after the first quarter, 25-10 at the half and 37-20 after three periods. Against Monument Valley, they led 24-8 after the first period, 41-18 at the half and 59-25 after three.
Also scoring in the Altamont game was Leah Swalberg with 8 points, Sarah Swalberg and Tracy Engleman with 6 points apiece, Bailie Packer with 4 points, Jill Vetere with 2 points and Crosby Hatt with 1 point. In the second game, Leah added 8 points, Crosby and Bailie each added 7 points, Sarah and Melissa Antillon each scored 4 points and Jill had 2 points.
For the boy’s team, they got down early against Altamont and played well until the fourth quarter to get back into the game. The Pirates were down 26-13 after the first period but outscored Altamont 15-8 in the second quarter to trail 34-28 at the half. In the third period, Green river again outscored Altamont by a score of 16-10 to be all tied up going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the effort could not continue and the Pirates lost the game by 19 as Altamont won the period 25-6.
Tyson Johnson led the team with 19 points and Brennan Bigelow scored 11 points to also finish in double figures. Luis Mendoza and Kayden Mecham each had 8 points and Jason Johnson scored 4 points.
Green River won their second region contest with the win over Monument Valley. Green River took a 22-9 first quarter lead and then continued to increase it over the rest of the game.
Tyson again led the team in scoring, this time with 24 points. All five starters finished in double figures in this game. Brennan scored 17 points, Jason scored 16 points, Luis scored 13 points and Kayden scored 12 points.
The girls finish up their season play against Navajo Mountain this Friday night and then wait for state. The boys are scheduled to play Dugway and Whitehorse in the near future.
