Emery County Aquatic Center Mom-N-Tot Pool Day
A mom-n-tot pool day hosted by the Emery County Aquatic Center for Tots up to kindergarten age will be held on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. beginning on Nov. 17. If you have an interest in this activity, let the pool know so they can arrange for lifeguards, 381-swim (7946).
United Way Community Angel Tree Archery Fun Shoot For ages 5-99
At the Carbon County Fairgrounds in the Event Center. Nov. 21. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Fun shoot is $10 per round or two rounds for $15. Each round will enter you into the door prize drawing. (3-D and paper target shoot). Long bow – recurve -compound shoot off at 3 p.m. for whoever is up for the challenge. All proceeds will go directly into the United Way of Southeastern Utah’s Angel Tree account for assisting and helping our families who will need help with the upcoming holidays. 2009 Grazing Workshop
The Castleland RC&D Council will be hosting a grazing workshop on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale. Topics to be discussed include growth stages of grasses/timing of grazing, how animals learn what to eat and where to live, grazing management, grazing improvement program (GIP)/combination of grazing allotments, and new plant varieties for rangeland/pastures. $15 per person, lunch provided. College of Eastern Utah Bread and Soup Night
College of Eastern Utah is hosting its 11th annual “Bread ‘N Soup Night” beginning Nov. 2 and continuing each Monday through Nov. 23. The event runs from 5-6:30 p.m., and held in the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Carbon County Food Bank. Adults are $5, students $4 and children under 5 years are free.

Emery High School Drama Announces Upcoming Plays
The big news is that we are doing “Hello Dolly” on Nov. 19, 20, 21. This will be a big cast musical with 35 people involved. Karly Urie is Dolly and Colton Leavitt is Horace Vandergelder. We are also planning on doing a comedy/drama “Lost In Yonkers” in late January or early February.

AARP Driver Safety Class in Green River
The Green River Senior Center and AARP have scheduled a class for residents of Green River on Tuesday, November 10. The four hour class will be held from 1-5 p.m. at the Senior Center. “I am excited to be able to come and present this course to the residents of Green River, especially in November because AARP has designated November as Driver Safety Month. It will be the second time that I have taught a Driver Safety Class in Green River” said Leonard Miller, course instructor. The last class was taught as part of the Open House at the dedication of the new Center. Topics to be addressed include: the importance of vision and the changes in vision that take place as we age, also, how reaction time and flexibility is affected through aging, the impact of hearing while driving, and how to identify ways the older driver may compensate for these changes. The course, for drivers over 50 years old, also includes: information on defensive driving techniques, newest traffic laws, how to handle potential problem situations while performing left and right turns, right-of-way laws, freeway traffic, trucks and buses, and what to do if/when confronted with an aggressive driver(s). The proper use of anti-lock brakes, airbags and safety belts, and how to assess one’s own and others’ driving abilities will also be included. There are no tests given in this class. Members of AARP will pay a reduced fee for the course. An additional incentive for taking the class besides the driver information received is a discount on auto insurance for those who qualify.

Forest Service Begins Christmas Tree Sales
Christmas tree permits will go on sale Nov. 23 at the Ferron District Office and Price Supervisor’s Office of the Manti-La Sal National Forest. Permits will cost $10 and can be purchased during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ferron and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Price.
In addition, the Price office will open two Saturdays, Nov. 28 and Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Christmas tree tag sales.
Customers should come prepared to pay with correct change or a check. The Forest Service cannot accept credit or debit cards, or make change.
The Forest officer selling tags will issue each purchaser cutting instructions. Customers traveling long distances for permits should call in advance to determine if permits are still available.
Vehicle access, except for snow machines, must be confined to established roads on the Forest. Roads may be muddy, snow packed and slick. Be prepared for winter driving conditions.
Orangeville Youth City Council
Youth City Council has a new advisor, Carmen Humphrey. The council is open to youth in Orangeville 7 through 12 grades.

Register Now for December ACT Test*
Registration is now open for the December 12, 2009 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before November 6, 2009.
The cost for the ACT test without writing is $32. When combined with the optional ACT Writing Test, the total cost is $47. Students who qualify may apply for a fee waiver through their high school counselor. The ACT website, www.actstudent.org
has helpful information, free sample items, and options to order inexpensive test prep materials to assist test takers get ready for the exam. However, the best preparation is to take rigorous core courses in school, study hard, and learn the academic skills needed in college. Most students register online at www.actstudent.org
Students may also pick up registration forms from their high school counseling offices; these forms must be postmarked by November 6, 2009. Late registration is available until November 20, 2009 for an extra $21 fee.

PREHISTORY WEEK POSTER CONTEST
Utah State History announces the 2010 Utah Prehistory Week Poster Contest. The winning poster will be professionally printed anddistributed nationwide to promote Utah’s unique past. Every year during the first full week of May, Prehistory Week celebrates Utah’s rich archaeological, paleontological, and cultural resources. Events all over the state include lectures, programs, activities, demonstrations, and tours.
The poster contest is open to all ages. Entrants may choose any material, design, or medium, but the principal elements of the design should depict aspects of Utah archaeology, and entries should be less than 16″ wide and 24″ long. Winners in three categories will receive cash prizes: grand prize winner: $250; secondary school winner: $100; elementary school winner: $100.

Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival

Hearing and Speech screening
Emery School District conducts annual speech and hearing screening to identify students who might need further evaluation of their speech or hearing. Students who fail the initial hearing screening will be given a re-test in 3 to 4 weeks. Screening is scheduled with the schools involved and takes place anytime during the school year. District Speech-Language Pathologists administer the tests. All district preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade, new students and any referrals will be screened for hearing. Pre-kindergarten students will be screened during kindergarten registration and 3rd grade students will be screened for speech only. Parents who do NOT want their child to receive speech or hearing screening tests must contact the school secretary.
