Domestic violence program in 13th year

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is the 13th year the Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition is sponsoring an awareness and educational program for the community. The program will be held on Oct. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. at the county building in Castle Dale. Lunch will be provided by the Coalition and door prizes will be given away. There is no fee and everyone is welcome to attend.
Event organizers said, “Our guest speaker/performer this year is Karsyn Robb. Karsyn is 16 and writes her own songs and music. She has brought inspiration to victims of domestic violence with her song “You Told Me”. Karsyn was born and raised in Park City, Utah. Her parents are Shawna and Michael and she has an older sister, Jaci, who is 24. Jaci is a graduate student majoring in psychology at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Karsyn maintains a 3.9 grade point average at Park City High School. She is an honor student and she plans to graduate after this year to pursue majors in song writing and music business in college. Karsyn has been active in the Big Brother/Sister program and has mentored a child for three years. She works part-time as an office assistant.Her mother describes Karsyn as a fun, energetic and compassionate person who loves people.
“Karsyn has performed in numerous musical productions and dance competitions for the past 10 years where she developed a sense of ease and love for being on stage. Five years ago, she began guitar, writing songs and composing music. Karsyn’s coach is Dean Kaelin, who also coaches David Archuletta. She has penned more than 200 songs on the guitar, piano, and mandolin.
Karsyn performs widely throughout Utah and ventures out of the state as well. Her music, a mixture of country and pop inspired by artists such as Jewel, Taylor Swift, and Michelle Branch, is filled with passion and heart.Karsyn says she loves to perform solo because she likes to connect with the audience. She also enjoys playing with a band because of the great energy it produces.
“Although her journey is just beginning, Karsyn is making her mark on the music world. In 2010, she was awarded First Place in the Utah Health Department Media/Song contest with “You Told Me”. All proceeds from the single are donated to the Peace House, a local women’s shelter in Park City. Most recent accomplishments include: Top 10 Finalist for Best Female Artist at the 2011 International Acoustic Music Awards; “Featured Artist” and “Best of Orion 2011” at the Orion Independent Music Festival; Finalist in “Judges Choice” for five of her songs at the Durango Songwriters Expo 2011; and performances on Fox News, Santa Barbara Showcase, Deer Valley Music Festival, and many other venues.
“The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition is excited to sponsor Karsyn as our program guest this year. We are looking forward to hearing her speak and perform. We hope you join us on Oct. 12,” said the Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition event organizers.
