The Lady Pirates finished their season at the state tournament in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center starting Feb. 15- 18.
The Pirates were first matched with Intermountain Christian and came out quickly, scoring at will it seemed. The Lions stepped up their defense and foul trouble plagued the Pirates. In the second quarter, post player, Jamie Johnson sprained an ankle which gave the team of only eight players even more depth problems. The players on the bench stepped up and the Pirates pulled off a relatively easy win, 51-40. Michaela Hughes led scorers with 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Megan Hatt had 16 points, six rebound, five assists and three3 steals. Feleisha Antillion had sevenpoints and six assists, Taylor Johnson ended with four points and five boards. Kira Engleman ended with three points and six rebounds and Jamie Johnson and Sydney Thayn ended with two points each.
The win put the Pirates in the winner’s bracket to face Rich. The game with Rich was a battle to muster offense for either team. At half the score was 7-16 in favor of Rich. These were season lows for both teams. The lid remained on the basket for the Pirates in the second half as many shots that appeared in, somehow rimmed out and the Pirates fell 29-55. Hughes had seven points on the night, followed by Hatt and Thayn with six each. Engleman had five points, Antillion three and J. Johnson two. The Pirates now had to square off against Layton Christian.
Green River was back to their old form in this one, starting off quickly and winning by a score of 62-53. Hughes ended the game with 26 points and 11 boards. Antillion had four threes for 12 points, Hatt got seven points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. J. Johnson also had seven points and seven boards. Thayn had five points, T. Johnson had three points and seven boards and Engleman ended with two points.
On the final day of the tournament, the Pirates were to face the Panguitch Bobcats in a battle for fifth and seventh place. Green River played the Bobcats to a nearly even first half but ended up falling by a score of 27-41 to finish in seventh place. Hughes had 14 points seven rebounds and five blocks. Antillion had sixpoints, Hatt ended with five points, four boards and three assists. J. Johnson had four points and four rebounds in a contest where the Pirates did not shoot a single free throw.
The Pirates came away ending the season in seventh place and doing the community proud. Congratulations Lady Pirates.
