Lady Cougars claw their way to first place finish at tourney

"The Canyon View Lady Cougars along with cheerleaders and coaches and the team mascot celebrate their first place finish in tournament play as well as being the league champions for the Castle Valley Athletic Association which includes teams from Emery and Carbon counties."

The Castle Valley Junior High’s held their annual basketball championship tournament at Mont Harmon Junior High on Feb.22-23. The Canyon View girl’s team and the Helper boy’s team came out as champions after the two-day affair.
For the boys, Mont Harmon defeated Canyon View and Helper defeated San Rafael on Tuesday to advance to the championship game. On Wednesday evening, Helper defeated Mont Harmon 61-52 to win. For the girls, Canyon View defeated Helper 34-32 and San Rafael defeated Mont Harmon 41-32 on Tuesday. In the championship game, Canyon View held on to win 32-28. In the girl’s championship game, Canyon View led 10-6 after the first quarter, 18-13 at the half and 28-21 after three periods. San Rafael got the deficit to 28-27 with 3:31 left in the game as the Bulldogs had scored eight straight points. Bayler Griffin finally made a basket with 1:15 left in the game to give the Cougars their first score of the fourth quarter. Griffin then made a free throw and Paytn Jeffs made a free throw to ice the game. Jeffs was the leading scorer in the game with 10 points. Aniston Curtis scored eight points, Griffin scored seven points, Skyler Sitterud scored five points and Amber Petersen scored two points for Canyon View.
Chandee Robertson scored eight points to lead San Rafael. Jarica Huntington and Maegan Butterfield each scored six points, Camrey Johnson scored four points and Gentry Noyes and Valerie Chynoweth each scored two points. Against Helper, Paytn Jeffs scored 12 points to lead the Cougars. Amber Petersen scored eight points, Aniston Curtis scored six points, Alexa Cook scored four points and Bayler Griffin scored four points.
