The Emery High 2012 baseball team concluded their region play with victories last week over South Sevier and San Juan and finished the region season with an 8-2 record and the claim of region champion. Richfield and San Juan finished tied for second with 7-3 records.
Emery defeated South Sevier 8-6 on Tuesday and then on Thursday, Emery defeated San Juan 3-1 as the Spartans scored all their runs in the sixth inning to grab the win. On Saturday, Emery traveled to Union High in Roosevelt and smacked the living daylights out of the ball as they scored 23 runs and had 24 base hits in six innings of play.
For the season, Emery is hitting the ball well with a team batting average of .387 as the Spartans have got 176 hits in 516 at bats in 20 games.
Three Emery Spartans are batting more than .500 for the season. Tappan Draper is batting .600 with Ridge Nielson batting .556 and Dominic Rondinelli batting .538. Geren Payne is batting .444 as he also is hitting the ball well.
In the San Juan game, Brandon Oliver started on the mound and held the Broncos to a single run and three base hits. San Juan scored their run in the fourth inning as they had back-to-back base hits, a single and a double.
San Juan went down one, two, three in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. San Juan had a single in the first inning and a walk in the final inning for their only other base runners.
Emery, after having only four base hits in the previous five innings, had three base hits in the sixth inning as they scored their three runs. After an opening strike out in that inning, Ridge Nielson singled, Tappan Draper doubled and Dominic Rondinelli was intentionally walked to load the bases.
After another strikeout, Kaden Feichko was hit by pitch to score Nielson. Oliver then singled to score Draper and Rondinelli and Emery led 3-1 and then grabbed the region win.
Against South Sevier, Emery scored two runs in the third inning, a single run in the fourth and fifth innings and another two runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead 6-0. In the bottom of the sixth however, South Sevier found life and scored six runs to tie the score.
Emery won the game by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take back a win that they almost allowed to get away from them. Draper and Rondinelli each had a double in the game as Emery pounded out 13 base hits.
Against Union, Emery scored five runs in the first inning, eight runs in the fifth inning and 10 runs in the sixth inning. Union scored one run in the second inning and five runs in the fifth inning.
