Letter to the Editor: Emery County Drivers need to slow down

Hey Emery County! Slow down! Let me share with you what my daughter witnessed. She was coming into Ferron when she noticed a small black dog running on the highway just outside Ferron headed towards Castle Dale. Being the animal lover she is, she was concerned that the animal would be hit so she turned around and went back to see what she could do to get this dog off the highway. She pulled over and put her hazards on and then with a flashlight in hand got out to call to the dog. It was evening and the fireworks had just ended moments before so traffic was heavy coming both ways. As she was calling to the dog which was disoriented a pick-up truck hit the dog and continued driving. This truck never slowed down to see what they had hit. It gets worse. As she looked at the dead dog near her vehicle next thought was to at least get this pet off the road but when she tried another vehicle came and hit the dog again. This driver also ignored the hazard lights flashing as well. We normal people see flashing yellow lights and slow down because we don’t know what possible problem is up ahead. These two drivers need some help and the rest of the public needs to be warned against individuals such as these who clearly have their heads misplaced. They could have easily hit my daughter. To the driver who hit and ran, you have no conscious. That was someone’s pet who they loved. You missed an opportunity to be responsible for your error. Instead others cleaned up your mess. I called animal control and made sure the pet was returned to the owner so they could have a proper burial. My daughter does have a partial description of the perpetrator’s truck and we will be keeping an eye out for sure. Hopefully this individual has pulled his/her head out and will be a more responsible driver. For the rest of us let it be a reminder that we need to pay close attention to what is going on around us as we are driving. The flashing hazard lights actually mean something! Slow down!
