Emery teams honor seniors: Advance to state

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery Spartans closed out the region season last week with their final home game of the season against Wasatch Academy. Emery won that game 48-23. Emery finished the season with an 8-2 region record, the same as North Sevier and South Sevier.
After finishing in a three-way tie, the three teams met up in Salina and had a coin flip. North Sevier won the first time around and received the number one seed out of region 15. Emery and South Sevier then flipped coins and the Spartans won and now have the number two seed. South Sevier finished third and San Juan fourth. Emery will now travel to Orem High School this Thursday for the first round of state action. Emery will play the final game of the day, a scheduled 8:10 start but it could be later depending on the other games of the day.
Emery finished the season with a 12-6 season record while the Millard Eagles finished 11-9 and in third place in their region. The winners in Orem move on to Richfield the next Thursday for the continuation of the tournament and the losers will go home and be done for the season.
Emery came out with an early lead against Wasatch Academy and led 15-7 after the first quarter. Neither team scored much in the second period as both had scored just three points with a minute left in the quarter. Emery outscored the Tigers 5-2 in that final minute to lead at the half 23-12. In the third quarter, neither team scored until Wasatch Academy did with 4:13 remaining on the clock. Emery finally scored on a Cassidy Labrum lay-up with 3:35 left on the clock. With just over a minute to go in the period, Labrum made the play of the game as she stole the ball on the defensive end and hustled down the floor and scored another lay-up on the offensive end of the court. Those were the only points Emery scored in the period as Emery won the quarter 4-2.
Labrum hit a three-pointer to start the final quarter and then the Spartan offense came alive and Emery scored 21 points in the final quarter and all was well. Cassidy led the team with 11 points in the game and she also had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Ashton Bell and Emily Olsen each scored 9 points and Bailey Rasmussen added 8 points. Rasmussen pulled down 11 rebounds and had 4 steals to lead the team in both categories. Bell had 3 steals and Olsen had 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Also scoring: Bayler Griffin, Lexie Huntington and Lexi Chynoweth with 3 points each and Taijah Price with 2 points. Huntington had 4 rebounds and Griffin had 3 assists.
