Last Saturday did not go as planned for the Emery High baseball team but the team has been here before and they will play another day. Emery
hosted Millard, South Summit and Enterprise last Saturday as the first round of the Utah 2-A State baseball tournament began. Delta, Gunnison and North Sevier were also host sites that day. Emery and Enterprise were ranked 1 and 2 and those two teams quickly vanquished their opponents in the first games of the day. Enterprise defeated South Summit and Emery ten-runned Millard 11-1. Emery and Enterprise then met in a second round game and the Wolves went home victorious over the host team 12-7.
In that Enterprise game nothing seemed to click for the two time defending 2-A champions, pitching was not crisp, fielders made uncharacteristic mistakes, runners got on base but could not score and the Spartans will now fight their way back through the one-loss bracket, just as they did before.
Dillon Wilstead started on the mound for Emery and according to his coach “was working from behind all game long.” Enterprise had 16 base hits in the game. Emery made five errors in the game and the Spartans left 11 runners stranded on the bases.
Emery scored twice in the first inning as Ethan Tuttle hit a homerun and Wilstead singled and scored on a single by Mark DeBry. Enterprise scored four in the third inning as they had four base hits and a hit batter in the inning. Emery scored one in the bottom of the third as Ridge Nielson singled and scored after singles by Wilstead and Tyson Roper.
Enterprise added four more runs in the fifth inning on five hits and a base on balls and the Spartans trailed 8-3. Both teams then scored four runs in the seventh inning but it was not enough for the Spartans. For Emery in that inning, Wilstead walked, Roper doubled, Tanner Lake singled, Tristan Deabenderfer walked and Race Nielson doubled.
Against Millard, Emery scored four runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, a single run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning. Emery had nine base hits in the game with Ridge and Dillon hitting triples and Lake hitting a double. Millard went three up, three down in four of the innings and scored their lone run on a pair of walks. Bryce Dugmore pitched the game for the Spartans and Millard went home hitless.
With the loss, Emery now gets the opportunity of playing more games this week than if they would have won. Emery will face Parowan at 11 am this Thursday at Spanish Fork. Presuming that they win that game, the Spartans will then face the winner of South Sevier and Grand at 4:30 pm that afternoon at Utah Valley University in Orem.
