The Emery High volleyball team split their two games last week as they hosted Manti and defeated them easily in three sets and later in the week they traveled to Gunnison and lost to the Bulldogs in three sets. The scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-16 against Manti and 18-25, 18-25 and 19-25 against Gunnison. Against Manti the Lady Spartans started strong against the Templars and allowed Manti just a single run of scoring more than two points in a row.
In the second set, senior Jessica Olsen started serving after the Spartans scored their 12th point and the Spartans played well as they scored the next nine points. In the third set with Emery leading 11-10, freshman Megan Jensen started serving and the team took the score to 19-10 as they scored eight straight points.
On Thursday at Gunnison Emery kept each set close but in each set they also started off slowly. Gunnison finished off each set strongly in claiming the win. Emery had started the season playing Gunnison in St George and had defeated the Bulldogs there in three straight.
The region race is getting close to the midway point and it appears that only the winless Manti Templars are out of contention at this point. Emery, Gunnison, North Sevier, Grand and San Juan will battle over the next four weeks for placement in the 2015 2-A state volleyball tournament at the end of October.
Emery will host San Juan this Tuesday evening and then will travel to North Sevier on Thursday to face the Wolves. After the Tuesday game Emery will have just one game left at home the rest of the season so every game will be vital to their success.
