Castle Dale City December meeting addresses slogan

By By

The Castle Dale City council met for their December meeting. One of the topics of discussion was the branding slogan for the city.
LeAnne Seely a concerned citizen, read a letter to the Council. She wants to change the Branding Slogan “Get Dirty With Us”. She finds it negative and offensive, and feels that it doesn’t represent Castle Dale. The slogan has sexual and criminal overtones. It is also demeaning to Castle Dale Citizens and businesses, and will harm the city’s image, and possibly stop some people from visiting Castle Dale.
Ron Sanders said, “I agree with what LeAnne said. We need a better phrase that would describe our community. I don’t feel that the “dirty” activities such as four wheeling cause people to stay in our community.”
Kathryn Seely read her letter to the Council. She objects to the slogan that only speaks to sports and recreation, and is not complimentary to the City’s Mission Statement. We should consider an all inclusive brand. Castle Dale is already famous for the Castle Valley Pageant.
LeAnn read a letter from Andrea Johansen, who couldn’t attend. She wants to get away from a slogan with double meanings.
Amanda Leonard, with the Branding Committee, explained the process of arriving at this slogan. The State of Utah hired a consultant, Roger Brooks to work with Emery County cities on branding. He is a branding professional, and knows what works to promote tourism. We went through a long process, and had hours of training. Many of the branding committee didn’t like the slogan at first until they realized that they didn’t forget it. We all agreed in the end that “Get dirty with us” would be our slogan. It would always be with a picture that would clarify the meaning.
Mayor Van Wagoner said, “We are trying to make this a thriving community despite the loss of jobs. Other cities in the county liked the brand and would have used it if we didn’t.”
Leonard suggested that LeAnne and other people meet with the Branding Committee and go through the process with them. Julie Johansen made a motion that the council refer this to the branding committee, so they could meet with LeAnne and her group and address their concerns.
Meagan Willberg spoke to the council about the Pioneer Museum. She presented documents showing the agreement between the City and the Pioneer Museum from 1969, and a power bill for the Museum. The County has been paying the electric bill for the Museum. She said the Museum Board did not want to pay for repairs to the roof.
She misunderstood that the City was offering the big Conference Room at no cost to the Museum Board, she thought it was a smaller room. The Mayor suggested that moving the displays could be an Eagle Scout Project.
A schedule was presented to the Council, with the Council Meetings on the second Thursday of each month, and a budget meeting on June 16th. The Council changed the April meeting to Tuesday, April 12 because of the annual ULCT Conference. They also changed the June meeting to Tuesday, June 7 because of the county fair. The budget hearing was set for June 21.
A schedule was presented to the council for paid holidays. The maintenance crew will work on July 24 and use it as a floating holiday.
Doug Weaver reported the Animal Control officer, Seth, is doing a good job in a difficult assignment.
Mayor Van Wagoner presented a schedule for newly elected officials training. “I want all of the council to go. Let’s try to all go together to the same one.”
The council will attend the Jan. 23 meeting in Provo.
Kerry Lake of the land use committee said at their meeting last week they made some wording changes in the temporary ordinance for cargo containers. We will have a public hearing on this at our next meeting with the council’s permission.
Doug Moreno will inform property owners that the ordinance does not allow stacking containers, and will inform the owner of the illegal container that it cannot be where it is.
Ignacio Arrien: reported at the welcome center, the footers and stem walls are poured. The site is backfilled. They will doing the plumbing next.
