Cleveland Town met for their March meeting. Councilman Mike Taylor conducted the meeting as Mayor Erni was out of town. Danny and Marie Johnson presented the JustServe program to the council. They said if there are organizations that need people to serve they can register. Also people who want to serve can look on the website to find opportunities to serve. You can post the service opportunities on the website. The town could use service for clean-up days, town projects and much more. Organizations such as schools, municipalities and others who have opportunities where they need people to serve can sign-up on line. The website is paid for by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but the website is non-denominational. Projects could include: painting fire hydrants, cemetery clean-up, painting, etc. Families and scouts can also serve. After a project is complete, you alert the website that it’s finished and they can take it off the website.
The Johnson’s said there is a lot of division in the country right now and the website is a way to draw people together to work for their communities. JustServe is a worldwide program. The Johnsons encouraged Cleveland Town to make use of the program to better their community.
Councilperson Kristen Vose said she is organizing a 5K run for the veterans and she will get on there to seek volunteers.
The board approved the watershare lease agreement with the Emery School District. They lease 150 watershares for $487.50.
The board approved the maintenance agreement for meter reading. This program saves a lot of money by not having to go out and read each meter manually. The board discussed the sidewalk projects for this summer. Their goal is to get curb and gutter down one side of the roads that don’t have any curb and gutter yet. There is also a problem with some spots crumbling. The state is responsible for crumbling curbs along Main Street and the town will look into any curbs in need of repair throughout the town.
Councilperson Joe Wandell said some of the new sidewalk and gutters are pulling away and the gaps are widening. The city will submit their list to the Castle Valley Special Service District.
There was a large overage in the cell phone charges for the city workers who share minutes. The board voted to increase the minutes to the plan. They agreed any further overages would be the responsibility of the employees involved.
Wandell gave the report from the Cleveland Days meeting. They are going to let the local church take over the pioneer night activities at Owen Olsen’s pioneer village. They have dutch oven cooking and cowboy poetry. Anyone wanting to help with the event is welcome. It is usually on the Monday of Cleveland Days week.
There have been people stealing the metal from the metal dumpster. This metal is used as a fundraiser for the Cleveland Days fireworks. The city office will send out a letter to residents letting them know of this problem and the sheriff’s office was contacted. The town will invest in some no scavenging signs to put at the dumpsters.
Vose reported the recreation district was grateful for the donation Cleveland Town made for the purchase of canopies. There have been some changes in the rec. district’s insurance. It covers leagues, buildings, participants and spectators. Special events will require event insurance. Carbon/Emery and Farm Bureau both offer event policies.
There has been a semi-truck parked along a Cleveland street and nearby residents are unable to see to get out of their driveways. The council will send a letter requesting the truck park along a side street where it won’t be a traffic hazard.
Councilperson Cindy Ward reported on April 1 will be the hunt for the golden egg. There will be clues placed on Facebook and the winner will receive a prize. On April 8 will be the Easter Egg hunt. There will be brunch with the Easter bunny. There will be a bake sale fundraiser to raise money for the Cleveland Days celebration. Events will begin at 11 a.m.
Taylor reported the new building for Castle Dale City, Castle Valley Special Service District and the Emery Water Conservancy District is complete and they are moving in. They are waiting on lighting for the parking lot. The Ferron Water treatment plant is on line. They will be hosting an open house for the new Ferron Water Treatment Plant. Meet with the staff and take a tour of the new facility Tuesday, April 11 from 1:30 pm to 4 pm.
Taylor thanked everyone for the time and effort they put into the council.
