Last week the Emery High baseball team played twice, both at home and none on the road, and the Spartan team split the two games as they won the Tuesday game and then lost the Thursday game. For the second time this season the Emery team played the Union Cougars and for the second time the Cougars prevailed, this time in Castle Dale by the score of 1-0.
The other Emery game was against Price as the Carbon Dinos went down to defeat by the score of 5-2.
At home, Emery managed to outhit the Cougars with five base hits to only four by the Union team but all the Emery base hits were singles while Union managed a triple and that is the lone score in the game. That triple was hit by the last man in the batting order in the third inning.
For the Spartans, Race Nielsen had three singles and Logan Labrum had two singles and they were the fourth and fifth batters in the line-up but Emery could not get a run home.
Tel Gardner started on the mound and threw just two pitches before he was replaced by Zach Jorgensen on the mound. Jorgensen completed the game pitching seven innings, throwing 59 strikes out of 86 pitches, struck out 11 batters gave up zero walks and just four base hits but still managed to not win the game.
Against Carbon the Spartans scored one run in the bottom of the first
inning and then Carbon tied the score in the top of the second. Carbon scored a single run in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game and then Emery tied up the game in the bottom of the third inning. Emery scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning while holding the Dinos scoreless and the victory was theirs.
Easton Gordon, batting second in the line-up, led the team with base hits, two singles and a triple. The team managed nine hits in this game with Gardner and Nielsen also having more than just one hit in the game with a pair of singles apiece. Jordan Balletka and Jorgensen each had a single in the game. Balletka and Gordon each scored twice and Gardner once.
Gardner again started on the mound and in this game, he pitched six and a third innings giving up six hits, three walks and he struck out four batters. Jorgensen pitched the final two outs and ended the game with two strike outs and a walk.
Emery is at Grand High in Moab on Tuesday, at South Sevier on Wednesday and then home on Friday with a rematch against Grand.
