On Monday of last week, the Emery High Lady Spartan softball team traveled to Moab to face the Grand Lady Red Devils in the first region action of the season. Unfortunately for the Lady Spartans the end result was the anticipated one as Grand prevailed 11-4 in seven innings over the Emery team.
Emery went scoreless through the first four innings of the game and trailed 4-0 when they came to bat in the top of the fifth inning. Emery would put four runs across the plate in the top of the fifth and tie the game up going into the bottom of the inning. Grand scored four runs to reclaim the lead and then the Lady Devils scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim the win.
Grand had eleven base hits in the game compared to Emery with nine base hits. Emery had four extra base hits compared to just two for Grand as Addy Healy, Morgann Donaldson and Bailey Huggard all hitting doubles, Bailey had a pair. The difference in the game was mistakes, specifically errors. Emery committed ten compared to just two for Grand.
Also, having base hits in the game for the Emery team were Ambree Bennett with a pair of singles, Donaldson, Adri Childs and Madisyn Alton. Bailey Huggard pitched the complete game for Emery.
Emery then played a non-region game against Altamont on the road on Wednesday and came home the victor by the score of 19-5. Emery scored thirteen runs in the top of the first inning and then scored in the next four innings in a game that went just five innings. Emery had twenty hits in the game and also gained twelve walks off of Altamont pitching.
With singles for the Spartans were Healy, Megan Dawes with a pair, Huggard, Alton with a pair, Taileigh Guymon, Childs with a pair, Jayla Weston, Regan Rasmussen, Braileigh Clark and Larissa Thompson with a pair. With doubles for Emery were Donaldson, Childs, Thompson and Clark with a pair. Rasmussen hit a triple. Childs and Clark each had three RBI’s.
Clark pitched the Spartans to the win as she went all five innings and gave up four hits, two walks and struck out five. Emery will have just a single game this week, a Thursday afternoon contest against Grand as the Moab team will come to town looking to defeat Emery for the second time this season.
