The cheerleaders will compete in the southern region competition and if qualified the state competition. This will open more opportunities for the cheerleaders. The school board approved the request with the stipulation the cheerleaders will only compete in the two events.
The MOU between the school district and the county was discussed. The county commission was not present to discuss the MOU. Board member Marie Johnson requested to table the MOU until clarification can be given concerning the use pf the Wibit as a fundraiser for the swim team.
Dayna Terry, counselor at EHS presented the changes to the scheduling and credits at EHS. The class of 2020 will be the first class to graduate with increased credits. The credit increase is needed to make sure students are not graduating too early and to challenge students to succeed academically. Several new classes have been added this year. There will be six advanced placement classes, 16 concurrent classes, 17 new classes and a CTE pathway for engineering. EHS will also offer broadcast classes through Utah State University. EHS will need to adopt a block schedule next year. EHS meets with USU once a month to discuss questions and concerns. Mr. Nobbe will be teaching Music 1010 this year. For a teacher to teach a college level course he/she must have a Master’s Degree.
Principal Garth Johnson gave the principal’s report for Huntington Elementary. He thanked all of the faculty and staff at Huntington Elementary. The end of the year testing has started and is going well. Mrs. McElprang’s second grade class performed their annual play recently. This is Mrs. McElprang’s 28th play. Mrs. Mills, Kindergarten class will perform their play on Thursday for the student body, parents, grandparents and the community. We have been using STEM kits in the classrooms. Students are learning about rocketry, circuitry and robotics. One of the popular STEM kits is the Little Bits electronic circuits. This allows the students to create their own electronic circuits. The kids love hands on activities and learning. Principal Johnson thanked the school board for their support.
Jared Black gave an update of all of the projects taking place. EHS will have some portable classrooms built to accomodate the increase in students. This will take place the second week of June. Other projects include: Carbon dioxide detectors, lighting improvements, sprinkler projects, Green River baseball field improvements, padding on gym walls and a trophy case for GRHS.
Superintendent Larry Davis gave his report. He was happy to report there will be no layoffs with the 6th and 9th grade transitions. GRHS had an accredidation visit and received a favorable report. Scott Crane was recently appointed as the new Southeast Service Center Director.
Gary Wadley from the Civil Air Patrol gave a presentation about CAP and invited everyone to the open house on May 6 in Price. CAP has an aerospace education program for teachers.
Neal Peacock, representing the Emery Education Association thanked the board for their good communication during the 6th and 9th grade transition and having no lay offs. Mr. Peacock would like to see more training for teachers who only teach one class.
Principal Kacey Fluckey reported the state Utah Education Association President visited GRHS. What impressed her the most was how much GRHS does with so few people. It was nice to have the UEA president visit the school.
