The Lady Pirates continued their winning ways this past week as they hosted the Piute T-Birds and came out on top 68-63 to record their third straight win.
This game was exciting and very close until the T-Birds started to pull away in the third quarter and late in that quarter had built a nine point lead. This was a high scoring game and in the fourth the Pirates turned up the defense and became very aggressive on the offensive end of the court. The Pirates moved the ball well and on 54 percent shooting from the field quickly closed the gap. Feleisha Antillion hit two of her six three’s late in the fourth to close the gap. Kira Engleman in her first varsity start of her career hit another big three late in the fourth that tied the game for the first time in the second half. The Pirates handled the Piute pressure late, and Antillion hit two free throws with less than a minute to seal the five point victory.
It was a great come from behind win for the Pirates who were led by Michaela Hughes. Hughes had an outstanding game from the start, scoring 26 on 11-15 shooting, pulling down 10 boards and coming up with six blocks. Antillion with her six threes, scored 20 and put up eight assists. Jamie Johnson had a very good game with eight points, eight rebounds and three assists. Kira Engleman also scored eight points while Sydney Thayn tallied six points. This was a great win for the Pirates and they now await region play and their next game which is on Jan. 13, 2012 at Pinnacle.
