Castle Dale Library Storytime
Pre-school age story time begins at the Castle Dale Library on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. On Sept. 1-Trails to your library, Sept. 8-Motherread event, and Sept. 15-Whales.
Car Seat Safety Check
Did you know that 90 percent of car seats are used incorrectly? Stewart’s Thriftway, ALCO Discount, Emery County Sheriff’s Office, Castle View Hospital Women’s Center and Southeastern Utah District Health Dept. are hosting a car seat safety check on Sept. 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Stewart’s/ALCO parking lot in Castle Dale. Please bring your vehicle and the car seats owner manuals if possible. Will also have finger printing available.
Peach Days Poker Ride
Ferron Peach Days ATV Poker Ride will be held Sept. 11. Sign up at 8 a.m. in the Mayor’s Park. After sign-up, feel free to ride in the parade as the ride will begin immediately after it. The poker ride route is the same as last year and we will make it back in time for the horse races. Prize drawing will be in the Mayor’s Park afterward. Sponsored by SouthEastern Utah OHV Club.
Environmental Health

Bike the Swell-Fall 2004
MECCA’s mountain bike festival will be held Sept. 24-26. The event is sponsored by Emery County Recreation. There will be three days of rides to enjoy the scenery of the Swell. Registration fee includes spaghetti dinner, continental breakfast, dutch oven dinner, T-shirt and entry into prize drawing. For more information call 653-2500 or 653-2440.
Emery County Care and Rehab is renting booth space for crafters and vendors for Peach Days. Donations to the craft fair are also being accepted. All proceeds will be used for special activities for the residents of the care center.
Peach Days
On Sept. 7, the race draw will be held at the fairgrounds at 6 p.m. On Sept. 8, a bike ride will begin at Mayor’s Park at 6 p.m. Exhibits will be accepted at City Hall from noon-5 p.m. On Sept. 10 exhibits will go on display at City Hall from noon-5 p.m., men’s and ladies golf tournament at Millsite Golf course, and fireworks will follow the dinner and will be at Millsite Reservoir. Activites on Sept. 11 will begin with breakfast and also a fun run at 7 a.m., and will include the parade at 10 a.m., ATV poker run after the parade, family fun day until 1 p.m., exhibits, Emery County Care and Rehab craft sale, horse races, demolition derby and dance. Peach Days Breakfast and Dinner
The Peach Days dinner will be held Sept. 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lower Park (fairgrounds). There will be a full dinner with entertainment, cowboy poetry and much more. The Peach Days breakfast will be held at Mayor’s Park on Sept. 11 from 7-9 a.m. Everyone is welcome and proceeds from the breakfast and dinner will go toward playground equipment for Mayor’s Park. The breakfast is sponsored by Ferron Youth City Council.
Share the Harvest
Donate surplus home grown produce to the local food bank in support of the Share the Harvest project in its 23rd year. Call the food bank at 381-5410 or drop off produce at 40 South Center Street in Castle Dale.

Defensive Driving
The Utah Safety Council is now offering a four hour defensive driving course for individuals in the Price area. The course will take place on Sept. 18 at the Castleview Hospital classroom located at 300 North Hospital Drive, from 8 a.m.-noon. Survival Fair/Emergency Preparedness
“Are you prepared to survive?” Come to the survival fair and become educated with the latest information. The fair will be held Oct. 8 from 5-8 p.m. at Emery High School. There will be many booths with all types of survival information available.
Economic Summit
Emery County’s 2004 Economic Summit “What’s Swell in Emery County” will be held Sept. 14 at the County Office Building in Castle Dale. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Pre-registration can be completed with Emery County Economic Development, 381-5576. Keynote address will be given by Jon Huntsman, Jr. and several breakout sessions will be held.
Bike 4 Breast Cancer
Kathy Betz, is riding 3,500 miles, solo across the country to raise awareness and promote proper breast health. She is the founder of Bike 4 Breast Cancer, which raises funds to directly support the hosting community’s breast cancer programs. She will be at the Shady Acres Campground on Sept. 3. Educational Opportunity Center
The College of Eastern Utah has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice. The Educational Opportunity Center can assist students with a variety of services including financial aid applications, college course selection and completing their GEDs, if needed. It is a free service and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. The Educational Opportunity Center is located in the Jennifer Leavitt Building CEU – Room 213. Feel free to walk in without an appointment or call Shawnee at 613-5243. During the summer the center will be closed on Fridays.
Car donations and the IRS
In recent years, the number of car donation organizations has increased dramatically. Publication 4303, A Donor’s Guide to Car Donations, provides descriptions of several different car donation programs, filing and disclosure requirements for charities operating these programs and related information. Veterans of Foreign Wars
A field service officer from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, department service office, will be in the area to assist in understanding and applying for rightful benefits, on Sept. 16 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Price Workforce Service Center.
Sustainable Agriculture Research Grants Available
The latest round of funding from the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program will soon be disbursed. Western SARE farmer/rancher grant proposals are due Oct 1 and professional development program proposals are due Oct. 15. CASA Volunteers Needed
Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number. Anyone can call 1-866-549-3800 to schedule an appointment, get information about local cancer support groups or to find out more about IHC cancer services and physicians. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Eyeglasses for Lions Club
The Huntington Lions Club is gathering used eyeglasses to be distributed to needy people in Third World countries. There is a special need for childrens glasses. For more information, contact Judy Lang at 687-5349.
