Ted Miller
MANCOS, COLO.-Theodore (Ted) Miller passed away March 28, 2004 in Mancos, Colo.
He was born April 16, 1913 in Linton, N.D., to Jacob and Christina Schnaible Miller. Ted spent his younger years in Isabel, S.D. He married the girl of his dreams, Frieda Dickoff of Timberlake, S.D. Feb. 6, 1938.
Ted had five brothers and two sisters. He and two of his brothers had a band that made music for barn dances, weddings and other celebrations all over the Dakotas.
In 1939, Ted and Frieda moved to Cripple Creek, Colo. where Ted worked in a gold mine. In 1942, the family moved to southeastern Utah, where he worked in the coal mines at Kenilworth and Hiawatha for a number of years, eventually settling in Helper where his family was raised.
Ted took up carpentry and became a master at cabinet making and home improvements. Work took him to Cortez, Colo. for a number of years.
No matter where he went, his music followed him. He played the accordion for dances and weddings in Carbon County for some 20 years. He was well known for his waltz and polka music.
Ted was also an avid fisherman and loved Huntington Canyon.
Ted is survived by wife, Frieda, of 66 years; son, Robert Miller and wife, Kathy, of Snohomish, Wash.; three daughters, Wilma Yelenich and husband, Marko, of Henderson, Nev., Jayne Lupo of Glendale, Ariz.; Shirley Miller of Salt Lake City; two sisters, Alma Miller of Sturgis, S.D.; Leah Gretz of Phoenix, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
Funeral service was held April 2 at 11 a.m. at Mitchell’s Funeral Home. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper.
Helen Lott Rasmussen
HUNTINGTON-Our beloved Helen J. Hardee Lott Rasmussen, 82, passed away March 23, 2004 in Ferron.
She was born Sept. 2, 1921 in Hiawatha to Rulon Aurelius and Pearl Ferneth Ungerman Hardee. She married Bruce William Lott Feb. 9, 1937 in Castle Dale and later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple in May, 1958. He died Jan. 10, 1980 and she then married Arthur Rasmussen Aug. 23, 1984. He passed away in May 1998.
Helen enjoyed reading, traveling, sewing and quilting, embroidery, gardening and canning. She also worked for the Red Cross, civil defense, Huntington Library, Castle Valley Credit Union, electronics and teachers aide.
She was a member of the LDS Church and served in many callings, including a mission in the Washington DC LDS Temple and the Manti LDS Temple.
She is survived by children, Don (Helane) Lott of Kearns; Fern (Derald) Oliver of Castle Dale; Ramona (Kim) Sherman of Salt lake; Dennis (Pauline) Lott of Escalante; and Billie Jean (David) Raisanene of Greshem, Ore.; 21 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Helen is also survived by sister, Donna (Len) Anderson; and brother LaVoy (Marilyn) Hardee. She was preceded in death by parents; spouses; son, Rulon Ray; brothers, Kenneth and Jack; sister Roylance; granddaughter, Sharon Oliver; and great-grandsons Christopher A. Cooper and Austin W. Grevstad.
Graveside services were held on March 27 at the Huntington Cemetery.
Betty Scartezina
PRICE – Betty Jane Williams Scartezina, age 79, passed away March 31, 2004 in Price.
The loving daughter of Frank Hein Sr. and Frances Katherine Ruthig was born on June 22, 1924 in San Diego, Calif. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Scartezina June 27, 1942 in San Diego, Calif.
Member of the Catholic Church and longtime resident of Carbon County. Betty was a loving housewife and mother, whose greatest enjoyment was caring and cooking for her family.
She is survived by husband, Rudy Scartezina; son, Dennis Scartezina, both of Price; sister, Gerry (Sam) Gilbert, San Diego, Calif.; brother, Frank (Tina) Hein, Coos Bay, Ore.; and three loving grandchildren, Jodi, Edward and Amber. Preceded in death by parents; son, Joseph “Joe” Scartezina; and brother, Roger Williams.
Betty’s family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at Castle Country Care Center for their many acts of kindness shown to our family during the past two years.
Funeral service was Monday, April 5. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.
Ray Stratton
EAST CARBON-Earnest Ray Stratton, age 90, passed away March 30, 2004 at his home.
He was born April 15, 1913 in Cotter, Baxter County, Ark., to Steve Franklin and Winnie Shelhorn Stratton. Married Sarah Bishop, later divorced. Married Dixie, later divorced, Married Twila Marie Allen Sept. 1, 1959 in Delta, Colo. Their marriage was later sealed in the Provo LDS Temple. Twila passed away Jan. 20, 2000.
Ray was an active member of the LDS Church and he loved to attend the temple.
He was a retired uranium miner who worked for several mines through the Uravan Belt. Resident of Blanding and Moab prior to moving to East Carbon in January 2000.
Ray loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed reminiscing with family and friends and he was an excellent storyteller.
Ray loved his family and he will be dearly missed by his children and grandchildren.
Survived by two daughters and one son, Polly (Sam) Sanderson, East Carbon; Wilma (John) Stubblefield, Fredonia, Ariz.; James A. Desirey, Reno, Nev.; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife, Twila; son Troy Lynn; daughter Daisy Gordon; and grandson, Benjamin Stubblefield.
Funeral services were held April 2 at 10 a.m. in the East Carbon LDS Ward. Burial was in the Blanding City Cemetery.
Jenavee Holton
EAST CARBON – Mary Ann Jenavee Stevenson Holton, age 88, passed away March 31, 2004 at the Castle Country Care Center.
Born June 1, 1915 in Sunnyside, to Daniel and Martha Curtis Stevenson. Married David Leonard Holton Sept. 7, 1942 in Evanston, Wyo. He died July 21, 1972.
Jenavee was a member of the LDS Church and she loved working on genealogy over the years. Graduate of Quish Beauty College.
Survived by daughter, Patsy (Joseph) Murphy, Fallon, Nev.; three grandchildren, Robert (Jeannie) Murphy, Phoenix, Ariz.; Kenneth (Kimberly) Murphy, Tucson, Ariz.; Susan (John) Marcum, Fallon, Nev.; eight great-grandchildren, B.J., Amber, Johnathan, Meredith, Mariah, Michael, Crystal, Lee; and brother, Melvin (Sylvia) Stevenson, East Carbon. Preceded in death by parents; two sisters, Ruth and Myrleen; three brothers, Keith, Daniel and Leon.
Graveside service Tuesday, April 6, 1 p.m., Price City Cemetery. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Tuesday one hour prior to service.
