The first annual John Wesley Powell Days was held over the weekend of June 18-19. The fun began on Friday night with a talent show in the John Wesley Powell River History Museum theater. Many participants displayed their talents, and in the end, there was no winner because they were all winners.
The next morning, the Close-Up Club from Green River High School prepared a full ham, eggs and pancake breakfast for everyone who showed up. Following breakfast, the fun began with games for everyone. Outside was horseshoes, basketball, jump rope, hopscotch, relay races, sack races, wheelbarrow races, ring toss, volleyball and water balloon competitions.
Indoors for those who wanted less athletic games, there was scrabble, checkers, chess, Yahtzee and bingo. For lunch, everyone went their separate ways and met back up again for karaoke in the museum theater.
Dinner began at 6 p.m. with a wiener roast in the memorial park at the museum. It was hosted by Green River City. Tom Burr’s root beer was the highlight of dinner, followed by a marshmallow roast.
The festivities were topped off with a drawing for a Joe Venus picture, cowboy poet Allan Clark and musician LaVar Wells. The band Out the Back Door performed country, folk and rock music with dancing in the parking lot of the museum.
