George Gianoulis
PRICE – George N. Gianoulis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away suddenly Dec. 17, 2002 due to complications from a rare allergic reaction.
Born March 18, 1923 in Kare, Crete, Greece, to Nicholas Gianoulis and Theodosia Prokopakis. After becoming a U.S. citizen he returned to Greece and married Ekaterina (Katherine) Damanakis of Episkopi, Crete on Feb. 3, 1963. He immediately returned to the U.S. with his bride to establish a new life and family in Price. Together George and Katherine had two children, Anthony and Theodosia Chrysoula (‘Goldie’).
He was raised, educated and lived half of his life in Greece. After high school he was accepted to medical school. He chose, however to serve in the Greek Army fighting in the Greek Resistance alongside the British against the Nazi occupation of Greece. He was directly involved in the notorious capture of the Nazi officer General Kreipe. From 1948-1950 he again served in the Greek military, stationed in Corinth, Athens, and Thessaloniki, fighting against the communists in the Greek civil war. He received numerous medals and honors for his military services. After the war he was employed by a government agency distributing humanitarian aid to the victims of war atrocities in Greece.
In 1956 George came to the United States to help operate his uncle Anthony Gianoulis’ coffee house in Price. He was a member of GAPA and the Pan-Cretan Society of America. He was a religious man and committed to his Orthodox faith. Member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price. He worked for the Carbon County Road Department from 1963-1982. In 1986 George and Katherine opened and operated the famed “Greek Streak” restaurant in Price serving Greek delicacies for 15 years. He spent the remainder of his life traveling and enjoying his family, especially his three grandchildren. He was overjoyed to have spent this past Thanksgiving with his immediately family in New York City. George was a friend to all and known for his hospitality and generosity. He was a kind, honest, hard working and honorable man. He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments. His family, in turn, is very proud of him for leading such an exemplary life.
George is survived by wife, Katherine; son, Dr. Anthony (Marina) Gianoulis, Salt Lake City; daughter, Goldie (Nicholas) Alissandratos, New York City; grandchildren, Gerasimos ‘Jeremy’ and George Alissandratos and Giorgio Gianoulis; brother, Stelios (Vasiliki) Gianoulis, Thessaloniki, Greece; sister, Chrysoula (Kosta) Bala, Athens, Greece; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at Castleview Hospital and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for their care. The family also thanks friends for their concern and support during his sudden illness.
Viewing to be held at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main St., Price, Friday, Dec. 20, 6:30 p.m. with a Trisagion prayer service. The family will host a memorial refreshment hour at the Greek Streak restaurant following the service.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 21, 9 a.m., at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 61 S. 200 East, Price. Interment immediately to follow at 1 p.m., at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 1342 E. 500 S., Salt Lake City. Following interment the family will host a makaria (wake) at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Memorial Hall, 279 S. 300 W., Salt Lake City. Due to logistical reasons regarding the interment, a formal makaria will not be held in Price that day. The family will host a makaria in Price at a later date after the traditional Orthodox 40 day mourning period.

Helen Leavitt
PRICE – Helen Barboglio Leavitt, age 86, died Dec. 16, 2002 at her home after a short illness.
She was born Oct. 23, 1916 in Helper, to Joseph and Jenny Causer Barboglio. Married Carl J. Leavitt June 24, 1939 in Price. He died July 27, 1968.
Helen was educated in Carbon County and graduated from Carbon High School and the University of Utah, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Helen served on the board of directors and was employed at both the Helper State Bank and First National Bank of Price for many years. She served on the board of directors for Eastern Utah Electric and Helper Furniture in Helper and Price. Helen had a longtime devotion to the College of Eastern Utah and the education of young people in Carbon, Emery, Grand and Duchesne counties. To this end, she established the Barboglio-Leavitt Scholarship Fund. It was her wish that the money be used to help the needy students get a college degree.
Helen is survived by son, Joseph Carl (Mimi) Leavitt, Phoenix, Ariz.; cousins, Ilene McKenna and Donald Causer, Salt Lake City; and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Carl; granddaughter, Jennifer Leavitt; two brothers, Frank and Joe Barboglio; and parents.
Funeral service was held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main Street, Price. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Barboglio-Leavitt Scholarship Fund, c/o College of Eastern Utah, 451 East 400 North, Price, UT 84501.
Hope Ishley
PRICE – Loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Hope Conder Nielson Ishley, age 83, passed away Dec. 17, 2002 at her home.
She was born May 11, 1919 in Angle, to Joseph and Eva Olive Moore Conder. Married Keith Nielson Feb. 19, 1938 He died Sept. 2, 1960. Married Gabriel Ishley Nov. 12, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nev.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Member Beauceant and Dansante Social Club. Hope worked as a bank teller at Zions Bank for many years. She loved to travel and enjoyed her many Caribbean cruises and trips to Hawaii. She enjoyed Mesquite and Wendover with her daughter and son-in-law. Hope and Gabriel enjoyed their many winters together in Lake Havasu, Ariz. She attended many mining conventions with her husband which was quite a treat. She will be dearly missed and a great addition to heaven.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 1 p.m., Price 8th LDS Ward Chapel. Family will be at the church one hour prior to services. Friends are welcome at Mitchell’s daily. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making donations to Shriner’s Hospital or the American Heart Association.
Rick Olsen
WELLINGTON – Ricky Eugene Olsen, age 40, passed away Dec. 16, 2002 from a work related accident.
He was born April 22, 1962 in Price, to Rolland Eugene and Alice Henman Olsen. Married Lisa Noyes July 1, 1985 in Price.
Rick was a lifelong resident of Carbon County and was presently employed with Trees Inc. as a foreman. He was a former longtime employee of Plateau Mining Company.
Rick’s greatest love was for his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He enjoyed farming and took great pride in caring for his horses. Rick will always be remembered for his keen sense of humor and practical jokes that he played on everyone.
Survived by wife, Lisa Olsen; two sons and two daughters, Ricky Olsen, Rachelle Hiefner, Cody Olsen, Courtney Olsen, all of Wellington; mother, Alice Olsen; three brothers, Joe Olsen, Don (Teresa) Olsen, Shawn (Jana) Olsen, all of Price; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Fred (Virginia) Noyes, Price; brother-in-law, Kip (Tamara) Noyes, South Jordan; daughter-in-law, Erin Olsen, Price; grandmother, Annie Bryan, Price; five loving grandchildren; and numerous caring aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father, Rolland “Sonny” Olsen; and grandparents.
Funeral service was held Dec. 19, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Wellington City Cemetery.
