It took a little longer than most games but the Green River Lady Pirates finally put away the pesky Monticello ladies team 47-39 and with the win clinched the region title for the season. The boy’s team from Green River had an easier time with Monticello as they won 61-40 and now lead the region with the season being half over.
For the girls’ team, this is an accomplishment of one of their season’s goals. They now have their eyes set of the state tournament, which begins in just two short weeks. With the experience and depth on this team along with the versatility, the players and coaches believe that a Saturday night game is a huge possibility.
Green River got out to the first quarter lead as they doubled up the Lady Buckaroos 12-6. Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter as the Pirates maintained their 6-point advantage. Monticello won the third quarter 13-11 to keep the game close. Green River closed out the game by winning the fourth period 12-8 to get the eight-point victory.
Adriana Cordova led the team in scoring with 20 points. Heidi Vetere finished with 9 points and Charle Vetere finished with 6 points. McKenzie Spadafora had 5 points, Brandi Webster had 4 points and Crosby Hatt closed out the Pirate scoring with 3 points.
Green River hosts Monument Valley this Friday night and then hosts Altamont next Tuesday to finish their regular season.
The Green River boy’s team won every quarter of the game to get the big win. They led 8-6 after the first period, outscored Monticello 20-12 in the second quarter to lead at the half 28-18. They then won the third quarter 16-10 and the fourth quarter 17-12 to get the 21-point win.
The big three for Green River each finished in double figures. Brent Johnson led with 21 points but Kaleb Fail and Kaden Robertson were right behind with 16 and 15 points respectively. The three have been in the tops of 1-A scoring all season and that did not change in this game. Also scoring were Jace Vetere with 6 points, Brennan Bigelow with 2 points and Weston Vetere with 1 point.
The boys now host Monticello this Friday and then play one game a week until the tournament starts Feb. 28.
The girls are 16-2 for the season and 7-0 in region play while the boys are 13-3 on the season and 4-0 in region play.
