Lady Spartans win 2, take region crown
Unlike the previous five region games, it took the Lady Spartans almost the whole 32 minutes of the ball game to finally put away the pesky Delta Rabbits and keep their undefeated region streak alive in a 36-34 win at Delta. After the narrow escape on Tuesday, the Lady Spartans went to Carbon and defeated the Lady Dinos for the second time this season, this time by a score of 60-40. With the win, Emery could no longer be caught by the Dinos and therefore earned the region crown.
At Delta, Emery experienced their worst shooting night since the season began, as they almost could not buy a basket. They were 11 for 48 on the night for shooting which is a horrible percentage for a team to shoot, 22 percent to be exact. They were 6 for 20 inside the three-point line and 5 for 28 outside the line. No Emery Spartan ended the game in double figures for scoring. Emery did not lead until the third quarter.
But the game did show that this team could win a game that is close in a hostile environment when things do not go right. It also showed that even if the starters have a bad night the others that play all the time could lead the team. It also showed that the team still plays pretty good defense.
The leading score in this game was Frankie Komar. Komar came off the bench to score 8 points including two 3-pointers in the third quarter. Scoring 6 points in the game were Jodi Robertson, Meagan Pearson and Rachel Rasmussen. Robertson also comes off the bench. Camille Fehlberg scored 5 points, Jodie Lundell scored 3 points and Caitlin Hansen scored 2 points.
Against Carbon, Emery took the first quarter lead and never looked back. Although they did not score until Lundell hit a three-pointer with two minutes gone in the quarter and although the Spartans did not play particularly well in the period, they still led 16-10 at the end of one quarter.
The second quarter brought more of the same offense as the Spartans had lots of turnovers; half unforced, and missed open shots. They played really good defense though as they shut down the Dinos and lead at the half 26-15.
The third quarter saw the Spartans really play good defense as they limited Carbon to 5 points in the quarter as they also scored the first 11 points of the period to open up a 37-15 lead.
ShiAnne Allred controlled the boards in this game and was also the leading scorer with 11 points. Coach Gordon on ShiAnne, “ShiAnne had a really good game, she controlled the boards, she played hard and she had a good game after having struggled the last couple of games. We need her effort to keep this going.”
Again it was balanced scoring that won this game for Emery. Pearson had 10 points, Rasmussen had 9 points, Lundell had 8 points and Fehlberg and Robertson each had 7 points. Lacey Montgomery, a sophomore saw action at the end of the game and scored 4 points while Komar and Hansen each scored 2 points.
Coach Gordon talked after the Carbon game, “The girls earned this and they deserve it. I am happy with the effort. I have hard workers on this team that want to get better.”
The Lady Spartans close out the season this Thursday at home against North Sanpete at 7 p.m. and then wait word of whom they will host the next weekend in the Spartan Center as the state play-offs begin.
