Kaleb Fail shoots for the Pirates. |
The two Green River High basketball teams hosted Monument Valley last week and sent the Cougars packing with two lopsided victories. The Lady Pirates first closed out their undefeated region season with an 84-50 win and then the boys kept their region record perfect at 6-0 with an 81-37 win.
The girls, as they have done a lot this season, jumped on their opponent early in the first quarter and then kept the pressure on for the whole game as they won easily. The score after the first quarter was 20-12 for the Pirates and they then outscored the Cougars 25-9 in the second quarter to lead at the half 45-21.
Heidi Vetere led the team in scoring with 34 points. She had 26 of those in the first half as the team was building their lead. Adriana Cordova was next with 15 points. McKenzie Spadafora and Charle Vetere also scored in double figures as they had 12 and 10 points respectively. Brandi Webster scored 5 points, Crosby Hatt and Lindsey Spadafora each scored 3 points and Leah Swalberg scored 2 points.
The Lady Pirates now host Altamont in a non-region game this Tuesday and then await the 1-A state tournament next week in Richfield. The girls are now 17-2 for the season and 8-0 for region play.
The boy’s team jumped on the Cougars even faster than the girls did as they led 18-5 after the first quarter and 43-9 at the half. They got up 62-18 at the end of the third period before everybody played and the fourth quarter ended up 19 apiece for the two teams.
Brent Johnson led the team in scoring with 24 points. Kaleb Fail scored 16 points while hitting two 3-point shots and Jace Vetere also ended in double figures with 10 points.
Kaden Robertson scored 9 points and Adrian Lucero scored 6 points. Brennan Bigelow and Wayde Mecham each scored 4 points while Jon Wilske, Weston Vetere, Tyson Johnson and Kayden Mecham each scored 2 points.
This was a game that evidently did not feature a bunch of fouls. Green River was 5 for 8 at the free throw line while the Cougars were 0 for 0 from the line, can that be correct?
Green River now travels to Altamont this Thursday for the only game this week.
