Arthur Kay Van Buren “Zook”
ORANGEVILLE-Arthur Kay Van Buren, “Zook”, 62, finished his valiant battle with adenocarcinoma on Oct. 2, 2007 at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah. He was born Aug. 13, 1945 to Fred Harold and Uwin Berg Van Buren in Ferron, Utah.
He was raised in Emery County, and served six years in the National Guard. He married Katherine Renee Ross in 1968 in Vernal, Utah. They are the proud parents of four boys,
Art loved Emery County and living here with his family, who were the center of his life. He had a love for the outdoors and experiencing outdoor activities with his family. They all loved camping, hunting, fishing and being together, and with friends.
Art is survived by Kathy, and the four sons he was so proud of: Rick (Wendy), LaPlata, N.M.; Cody (Daniella), Ogden, Utah; Corey (Shelby), Price, Utah; and Dusty (Doni), Orangeville, Utah. He is also survived by his mother Uwin; brother Kelly (Beverly), Cortez, Colo.; sisters, Roanna (LaDue) Scovill, Santaquin, Utah, Winifred Lippold, Centerville, Utah, Barbara (Ray) Olsen, Jerome, Idaho; and the 12 grandchildren who so lovingly called him “Ponkin”: Colton, Kaylee, Sydney, Matthew, Devin, Daxson, Cadence, Cambrie, Talysa, Mitchell, Gage and Hunter. He will be remembered by many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Fred.
A celebration of Art’s life was held on Saturday Oct. 6, 2007 at Cottonwood Elementary School in Orangeville. Viewing was from 10 a.m.-noon with services beginning at noon. Interment in the Orangeville City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Rudy Scartezina
PRICE- Our loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Rudy “Scarty” Scartezina, age 85, passed away Oct. 1, 2007 at his home in Price.
He was born July 6, 1922 in Sunnyside to Guiseppi and Mary Barich Scartezina.
Married Betty Williams June 27, 1942 in San Diego, Calif. She died March 31, 2004.
Rudy was a graduate of Carbon High School. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Rudy was a lifelong resident of Carbon County and a long time business man. He was a member of the Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church; an honorary life member Price Elks Lodge #1550. His hobby was restoring cars, which he did with professionalism. He loved fishing, hunting, golfing, and listening to Frankie Yankovich and Dean Martin. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survived by his son, Dennis Scartezina, Price; three grandchildren, Jodie Scartezina, Salt Lake; Edward Scartezina, Cedar Edge, Colo.; Amber Lewis, Salt Lake; brother, Edward, Pocatello, Idaho; sister, Stella Gilligan, Albuquerque, NM.
Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; son Joseph Scartezina; brother, Francis; two sisters, Marie Moffat and Margaret Winters.
Funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, 2 p.m. Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to service. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers family suggest donations to the Heart Association.
Helen Allred
SPRING GLEN-Our loving mother, grandmother, sister, and longtime resident of Spring Glen, Helen Ann Rusk Allred, age 87, passed away peacefully Oct. 7, 2007 while surrounded by her family.
She was born May 5, 1920 in Leadore, Idaho to William D. and Polly Ann Walters Rusk.
Married Arthur M. Allred, Nov. 7, 1938 in Salmon, Idaho; he died on June 20, 1978.
Helen was a resident of Spring Glen since 1942. She worked as an LPN for many years at Carbon Hospital prior to her retirement. Helen enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors and she was happiest when she was gardening or just working in her yard. She enjoyed cooking, canning and crocheting. Helen will be dearly missed by her family and a community of friends.
Survived by her children, Orson William (Laura) Allred, Price; David M. (Bonnie) Allred, Spring Glen; sister, Grace Williams, Salmon, Idaho; grandchildren, Matthew Allred, Price; Mark (Ranay) Allred, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Jennifer (Glenn) Neilson, Price; Denise (Jeff) Whitley, Longwood, Fla.; Tracy Smeeton, Vancouver, B.C.; six great-grandchildren; and her special friend, Aldene Thomas, Carbonville.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur; and a brother, Ray.

Shirl C. McArthur
Father, grandfather, great-grandfather, businessman, and civic leader, Shirl C. McArthur, age 88, passed away peacefully in Elmo, Utah on Oct. 8, 2007.
He was born Aug. 23, 1919 in Lawrence, Utah to Cyril and Doratha Ardilla Day McArthur.
He married Bessie Sitterud, March 1, 1941; their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple on June 29, 1942.
Shirl graduated from North Emery High School and received an honorary degree from the College of Eastern Utah.
Shirl was a coal miner, superintendent of the Deseret Coal Mine, President and founder of American Coal Company, active in many coal mining organizations and public servant. He served in the CCC. He served as Mayor of Huntington three terms and formed the Castle Valley Mining Company. He was President of Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, and on the executive committee of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. He was first vice-president, president elect, and president of the Utah Mining association, a member of the Colorado Operator’s Association, and president of the Utah Coal Section of the American Institute of Mining. He earned many top industrial awards, and was chairman of AARP, member of the board of directors of First Security Bank, Price District, and finance chairman for the Emery District Boy Scouts of America.
Shirl was an active member of the LDS church and loved the Lord. He served in numerous callings. None he enjoyed more than serving with his wife in the Manti Temple and being called with his wife on a second mission to write the history of the Deseret Coal Mine.
Shirl is survived by daughters, Shirlee (Ron) Knighton, Sheila (Glenn) Sebring, Sharol (Don) Childs; sons, Stuart Si (Carol) McArthur, and Shane D. McArthur; daughter-in-law, Maureen McArthur; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and sister, Gladys Joyce Larsen.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bessie; son, Scott Lee; grandson, Bradley Sebring; his parents; and his sister, Thelma.
Funeral services will be held Thursday., Oct. 11, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Huntington LDS Stake Center. A viewing will be Wed. Oct. 10. 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Huntington City Cemetery, under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Vickie Elliott
A noble, caring wife, daughter, sister, mother and grandmother passed from this life unexpectedly on the morning of Sept. 22, 2007 due to a chronic medical condition she had fought and conquered for many years.
Vickie Lee Fish Elliott was born to William Hugh Fish and LeOra Brodrick Fish on Jan. 21, 1950 in Price, Utah. She grew up in Huntington, Utah and graduated from Emery County High School and went on to graduate from Salt Lake City Community College. She was the prototype for nanas and spent her most glorious moments surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Nana’s was the place snacks, tickles, hugs and where Sponge Bob Square Pants ran 24 hours a day. Nana’s was the place to get elastic sewn in saggy pants and the most glorious hug ever to mend a hurting knee. Only a nana hug will fix the emptiness she has left in our hearts and lives.
Nana is survived by her parents William Hugh Fish and LeOra Brodrick Fish of Huntington, Utah; her two sisters Brenda (Shon) Frye of Sigurd, Utah, and Susan ( Bill ) Moore and niece (Elizabeth) Moore of Monett, Mo.; one brother Scott Hugh Fish of Yarnell, Ariz.; her husband of 35 years Kenneth L. Elliott. Murray, Utah; son Kevin (Maurine) Elliott; daughter Shannon Elliott of Salt Lake City, Utah; son Michael (Teniel) Elliott of Salt Lake City, Utah; and grandchildren Hannah Jane Elliott, Hailey Elliott, unborn baby boy Elliott, Jacye Swenson, Bailey Swenson and her most special buddies Trey Joseph Elliott and Mehki Michael Elliott.
Mom thank you for the honor of being your daughter. You will always be my best friend and Trey will always know how his Nana punk loved him. Love Shan.
No farewells were spoken there was no time for good-byes. You were gone before we knew it, only God knows why. If tears could build a stairway and hearts build a lane, we would walk the way to heaven and bring you back again. Friends may think we’ve forgotten when at times they see us smile, little do they know the heartaches smiles hide all the while. To some you may be forgotten, to others a part of the past, but to those who loved you, lost you, your memory will always last. Always in our minds and for ever in our hearts, we love you the mostest sister sunshine.
The funeral services were held at the Cottonwood Stake House on Sept. 25, 2007, and the interment was held at the Mt. View Memorial Estates in Murray, Utah.

Kurt Bryce Brasher, 43 passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2007. He was born January 14, 1964 in Price, Utah.
A graveside service was held Thursday, October 4, 2007 at 2 P.M. at Cleveland Town Cemetery, under the direction of Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale, Utah.
