Scrapbook and Card Class


A scrapbook and card class will be held Oct. 19 at the Castle Dale Senior Center from 5:30 p.m.-12 a.m. Features will be holiday layout; surprise Halloween craft; dream layout; mini album paper craft project; and flips, flaps, and folds cards. Flu Shots


Southeastern Utah District Health Department will start giving flu shots Oct. 23 at the Castle Dale office. The vaccine will be offered 8:30-11:30 a.m. After Oct. 23 shots will be available Mondays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and Monday-Wednesday 3:30-4:30 p.m. There are no priority groups. Calling All Cute Babies


Is there a “Cute Baby” in your family? As Duckwall-ALCO Stores, Inc. marks the 21st year of its annual Cute Baby Contest, residents in communities near the company’s local stores are encouraged to bring in photos of their children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews. Photos of all babies are posted on Mason Jars at all Duckwall-ALCO stores. Winners of the Cute Baby Contest are chosen by shoppers who cast their votes with dimes for their favorite cute baby. Spinal Care Classes


Spinal care classes are being offered free to the public by Dr. Ronald B. Sanders at Castle Chiropractic. These classes will help identify things that people do wrong that injure the spine. They will also discuss exercises and remedies to help alleviate back and spinal problems. This class lasts one half hour, from 4-4:30 p.m., and is given every Tuesday at Dr. Sander’s office at 46 East Main Street, Castle Dale.

“October Awareness Program”


The Emery County Domestic Violence Coalition is sponsoring their ninth Annual “October Awareness Program” in conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Oct. 24, at noon in the Old Court House, second floor, Castle Dale. This program and lunch are free to the public Guest speaker: Rita Mangum, LCSW. Rita is the Chief Program Officer at the Salt Lake City YWCA. She has extensive experience working with victims of domestic violence. Rita is an expert at identifying and treating stress and trauma. She will talk about the symptoms of stress and trauma and how it can affect us physically, emotionally, and mentally. Rita will offer strategies on how to cope with stress and trauma and how we can help others who are experiencing these adverse effects on our well being.

Emerald Dream Ball National Search


In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month the Emerald Dream Team is pleased to announce a National Search for 12 women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have a compelling story to tell. The women chosen will be whisked away, with a guest, to Las Vegas on Dec. 26, all expenses paid, for a week of absolute pampering and fun. Their week will end with a New Year’s Eve Ball thrown in their honor which has been deemed the Emerald Dream Ball. The application process will run from Oct. 8 through Nov. 8. Staying Mobile With MS


The National MS Society Utah State Chapter presents “Getting There: Staying Mobile with MS” to the MS community of Price and its surrounding communities on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at 838 Westwood Boulevard in Price. Hope Jensen, Physical Therapist with Cottonwood Hospital will present and be available for a question and answer session. A video will also be shown to discuss different aspects of mobility with MS. Farm Bureau Essay Classes


The Emery County Farm Bureau announce the 2007 essay and creative story contest. The theme is Celebrating Agriculture. Entries should not exceed 1,000 words. Age groups are: K-2, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and adult. Stories and essays may be illustrated. Entries are due Oct. 31. Mail entries to Barbra Jones, Box 1234, Huntington, UT 84528. Prizes will be awarded on a county level and winners will advance to the state level.

Emery County Historical Society


The Museum of the San Rafael in conjunction with the Emery County Historical Society announce a reception in honor of Peter L. Goss, PhD., Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Museum of the San Rafael. Peter L. Goss is an architectural historian and documentary photographer at the University of Utah. He has undertaken a rephotography project in which he tracked down a number of original houses and rephotographed them with today’s occupant’s standing before them. Some of those rephotographs are J. W. Seely and John Y. Jensen homes in Castle Dale and Bishop Oveson’s home in Cleveland. These homes were first photographed by George Edward Anderson, one of Utah’s most prolific late nineteenth and early twentieth century photographers. Emery County Farm Bureau Annual Banquet and Business Meeting


The Annual Banquet and Business meeting will be held on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Huntington Senior Center. New officers will be elected and a light dinner will be served. The banquet is free of charge and is free to the public.

Museum Amateur Photography Exhibition


The College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum staff invites amateur photographers to participate in its photography exhibition being displayed from October to December on the second floor mezzanine. According to Christine Trease, submissions will be accepted the weeks of Oct. 8 -12 and Oct. 15-19 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the museum. No size limit has been set, but the gallery staff reserves the right to jury pieces at their discretion. After the photography exhibit concludes, submissions must be picked up Jan. 2-4, 2008 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. with no exceptions.

Food Handler’s Class

Soldiers Addresses Needed


American Legion Auxiliary #42 of Ferron is looking for addresses from people of Emery County that have loved ones proudly serving our country in a war zone such as Iraq or Afghanistan. We have a program started three years ago called Operation Home Support which we send packages to soldiers, but we need help from Emery County residents with the names and addresses of your loved ones that are serving. They need a package from Operation Home Support to let them know they aren’t forgotten and that we care and support them. Share the Experience Photo Contest


The Utah Office of Tourism is encouraging amateur photographers with a love of Utah’s public lands to help promote the state’s beauty in a national contest. The contest is open to the public and accepting submissions until Dec. 31. A total of 14 photographs will be given awards for their excellence. The Grand Prize winning photograph will be printed on the 2009 Federal Recreation Lands Pass and the photographer will receive a new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. Local Veterans Employment Representative


A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. CASA Volunteers Needed


Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children.
